$U.S. Greed$

To futher illustrate my point of U.S. politicians being money driven jerks:

"The PDEA--the result of intense lobbying from large copyright holders over the past six months--has emerged as a kind of grab-bag that combines other proposals introduced in the past but not approved. One section that first surfaced last year punishes an Internet user who makes available $1,000 in copyrighted materials with prison terms of up to three years and fines of up to $250,000." -CNET News.com

The judge don't said that file sharing was legal.

Justice Konrad von Finckenstein ruled Wednesday that the Canadian Recording Industry Association did not prove there was copyright infringement by 29 so-called music uploaders.

And yes our politicians are money drivens too. The liberal party is in a big scandal right now.

And some politician want to change the law to make download illegal.

And if you want to know why it's not illegal for now go see this FAQ

now, i heard an account from a canadian lawyer a while back that showed this to be false, but presumably this brings up some new evidence...

No it's true zootm, it is fully legal in all aspects. The judge cited a library as an example b/c there are photcopiers there for anyone to photocopy the copyrighted books and periodicals, so he said digital music and other media fall under the same category. The CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) will try to appeal it though, but for now, a policeman friend of mine tells me it's legal, and so does the judge more importantly!

Until this ruling is overturned on appeal or parliament amends the copyright law, uploading/downloading music is perfectly legal in Canada.

They can't even gather evidence to use in the future. First of all that would violate the privacy act.
Second, gather evidence about what? It is legal.
