WMP9 - Classic Microsoft?
Just got a new computer that came loaded with all the new Microsoft stuff (Win XP, IE6, WMP-9) The computer is nice (3.2 ghz) but when I went to one of my sites that have m3u's pointing to mp3's, guess what, WiMP didn't want to play them. Okay, so I pop up my download files off of my hard disk from the other machine, grab my last downloaded copy of WinAmp and install it, and set Windows to auto open WinAmp for m3u's and mp3's. Tried it again - whutz dis?!! WiMP is still trying to grab it and feed me an error.
So here's what I think the deal is: MS gets big bucks from ISP's to be able to offer WiMP streams. Too many people are getting up on how to stream mp3's via m3u - starts cuttin' into MS coffers when there is diminishing incentive for ISP's to buy their stuff. Solution, come up with a player packed in with the browser that effectively screws up the m3u/mp3 streams. The more random the better. People will eventually get fed up with their audience not being able to get the message and pay the bigger bucks for a WiMP streaming ISP. Anyway, now that I've vented a bit, tell me that I'm just being paranoid , that there's an easy solution (tell me what it is, of course), and you can even chide me for being an audio/Intenet neophyte. Thanks in advance for all your derision.BG |

Try opening WMP and telling it not to be associated with anything, uncheck all the boxes under Tools -> Options -> File Types, or at least the ones you dont want.

Nada
. Didn't work. Now rather than an error message, the media player still pops up in a frame to the left of the browser and just does nothing. So my theory still holds that it's classic Microsoft screwing with the playability of other's software that impinges on their own. Earlier versions of WiMP worked just fine playing m3u's.

Uninstall the WiMP. With a good program like Winamp, who needs it anyway.
When I re-install my operating system, one of the first things I usually do is go to the Windows Media Player folder and delete everything that's in there. A few things will pop back automatically, but they don't bother me.

Internet Explorer > View menu > Explorer Bar > Media
Media Options (button at bottom) > Settings: Uncheck: Play web media in bar Winamp > Prefs > File Types Select mp3, m3u, pls and any others Checkmark "restore associations at startup" Close & reopen Winamp. |

DJ Egg & Wildrose Wally:
Thanks for your tips. Problems with DJ Egg's suggestions. First of all in the Windows View> Explorer Bar>Media it only gives me an on/off selection. The other problem, I don't find any programs for Winamp in my startup in WinXP. I'm a real newbee with using Winamp. The only time Winamp appears is when I select an mp3 out of my Windows explorer bar and then it's only the small player that appears. What am I missing? BG |

Never mind, I found the menu in Winamp and made the changes. Still doesn't resolve Microsoft issue. BG |
