Some people like "Enhancer" (is that the name of it?), but to my ears it turns the sound to mud. I guess it depends on the quality of your audio hardware as well.
For speaker listening from Winamp output on my network server feeding my home theater system, I use no DSPs nor equalization in Winamp, but I do use Bass @ 100 Hz (q = 1.50) +2 dB on all channels (which only affects the subwoofer with the Acoustimass 10). At night, I also use dynamic range compression on my receiver (set to "Max"), but I leave it off entirely for normal music listening during the day and early evening. For headphone listening, I use ShiBatch SuperEQ for tone balancing, 4Front Headphones for spatial reverb and simple Crossfeed for soundstage control. I also tinker with iZotope Ozone from time to time. It has an awesome sound, but I still prefer a mostly flat and untainted response for normal listening. (Probably because I'm accustomed to doing so many ABX tests. )

And Enhancer is a DSP. You might get lucky and find just one that makes music sound good to you with headphones. But after searching for weeks, it took three for me. The result is perfect though. Soundstage is nice and large, tone balance is excellent and reverb is just enough to improve spatiality while not being "echoey". I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |
