It's an email service offered by google, a company vilified in some parts for it's supposed 'spying' on your surfing and searching habits, somehow a big fat gb sized mailbox that will deliver tailored adverts to your screen based on scans of your stored email is ok though....

I do use google for search, even I even used google to find the std.mi I was looking for, cause it didn't come up on the forum search here :P

It's so leet to hate gmail

the reason so many new threads are appearing is that many invites have been sent out the past week. and also, people like having others lick their ass for something.

gmail is actually very simple and fast. you'd know if you used it.

Well, if I want to contact someone fast, I use IM, if it doesn't matter, I send a mail, so why would I choose something in between? And I don't belive Gmail is faster than IM, unless it is a form of IM that is.

well, it does show your letters as conversations.. but that makes it more like a forum.

Yahoo mail now gives you 100mb of e-mail storage. If you have not heard.

http://mail.yahoo.com/

We're off to the races; soon massive amounts of memory will be virtually free. Now the question becomes: How will we use that much storage? The obvious answer is that we can just start saving everything we do -- and even all the media we consume -- for as long as we live: enter Lifetime Digital Memory, or LDM for short.

If you take into account that a music CD can store 74 minutes worth of music in less than 700 MB using compression, this makes Tony's total storage requirement a paltry 1 terabyte, versus the 15 TB in his calculations.
I also ran some numbers for photos and I was able to take a 180 degree photo, one per minute, compressed to 25K per image, with the following storage needs:
35.15 MB per day
12.52 GB per year
1.22 TB per hundred years
Granted, the picture quality would not be the greatest, but then compression technology will improve over time.
I think that the assumption that you could put this much data in a terabyte is sound. What I would worry about is the life span of the storage media itself.

The rest of the story

I was titillated that a newly opened Gmail-related thread (with title Gmail) had this query as its opening sentence:

Quote:
Why the donald duck are there so many GMail threads appearing suddenly?
It's not often that you can answer your own question in one sentence--with a question.

Speaking of which, go to the gmail invite-request thing and help me out! Please! I got a friend with a fo' in the basement! (I have no idea what I just said.)

g-mail is only a rumor, like the g-spot and non-man-hating feminists.

And On that day, the Lords of the land said unto their Master Architect, "The temple you have made to the gods of Wasabi and Maki has brought us no great prosperity" and they sent out him into the lands.

As he traveled to a far off land, he found he wasn't traveling alone, but that he had gained companions, and when they found their new land, they started work on a new temple, one that would be OPEN to all who wanted to worship.
