Hissing noises

Hi, can anyone please suggest what may be causing the annoying hissing sounds that occur intermittently when I am playing or ripping some of my cd's. It does not seem to happen all of the time or on all cd's. I have noticed that if I am playing a song it sounds ok but then if I try to rip it, this will bring on the noise. I have purchased the latest version of Winamp, my system is 98SE, I don't have a sound card fitted it is an on board type. Otherwise I have no probs at all. Don't know if any other info is required to help with a diagnosis, but let me know if so.
Any help would be gratefully received in stopping this very annoying problem, totally spoiling my enjoyment of the music
Thanks in advance, Dave.

What are your ripping settings?

Maybe you should try a higher bitrate or in case of mp3 preset standard.

I have tried various settings, normal to high quality and different speeds, it does seem to be better at something like 0.5normal time. Could it be the CD rom drive itself do you think.

Bad ripping quality usually causes clicks and dropouts.

To eliminate other causes:
Try ripping to uncompressed wav and if you still get the hissing noise try using wnaspi32 instead of the sonic engine.
If the wnaspi32 fixes it then use it to rip to mp3 or m4a.
