The future from the 70's was pretty cheesy

Wow...My grandmom is recyling these old unwanted magazines to make space in the back room, and they're these magazines from the late-70's, early-80's called "Omni"...I don't know what the magazines were about, but each cover had some drug-influenced-like surreal painting, and all had some article about space or "the future"...Everything about "the future" was some invision of transporation by monorails and flying cars and buildings were suspended thousands of feet in the sky al-la the Seattle Space Needle...Something like a mix from the Jetsons and Star Wars...And then there are some people in the magazine that thought fish would fly and cybernetics would take over the human body...

"The future" is here some 20-odd years later, and we're still restricted to 4-wheel cars, our buildings are grounded, fish still live underwater, and I don't have an electrical jack running up my ass...

Care to predict the future twenty years from now and see if you can do better?

Oh, geez, Omni. I remember those.

The pics and articles were intentionally outlandish. It wasn't like Scientific American. It was science mixed with entertainment. Their business was reaching out and trying to portray what the future might be like, but it was more in an "H.R. Giger" way than in an "Albert Einstein" way.

Keep those magazines! They're vintage, and will sell for very good money someday (if not right now, even).

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

internet will further revolutionize our world but flying cars - ain't gonna happen in our generation, if ever, people may not live much longer. i don't see a purpose for ungrounded buildings other than earthquakes and floods.

They've got wheels, I think you can drive them...

If you want more good laughs, look at similar mags from the 40s & 50s.

Edit: Or wait about 20 years and look at the ones out now...

My Mom used to get "Omni" (The Meny/Multy), here is here explination of it.

Hi, Vie's mom, to me Omni was a kick-back against the whole fantasy genre suddenly being classed as sci-fi. Hard sci-fi given a voice at the point that elves, wood sprites 'n sword & sorcery started packing out the mags that I used to enjoy.

These days it's rather quaint, but I'd still read it over LOtR...Tolkien has much to answer for.

Instead of getting 600 spam messages about enlarging my penis a day I will get 602. Cars will get better gas mileage and or more power. Less reliance on metal for transportation and more on plastics. Special carbon materials will be made. Computers will be made out of diamonds. Ram will be magnetic. The disparity between the rich and poor will quick and there will be a revolution of sorts of the poor to over throw the rich...
