Weird Burned CD

I was over at my friend's house, and he had a CD I really wanted...so I ripped it to his computer in MP3 form, then used windows media player to burn a CD in CDA form. but...the CD sounds like crap, every time there's a drum beat it crackles. I've tried everything with it- volume, preamp, EQ settings...nothing works. Anybody got any suggestions?

sounds like the levels might be out - or the quality of the MP3 might be too low?

You might be trying to burn a MP3 at 128kbps when the actual file is maybe 60kbps??

The moral is, don't place CDs near a bunsen burner.

The moral is, dont let Griffinn near a serious thread.

Its probably a transcoding issue as Wavestreaming said. However, try a different program next time.

i've heard a cd like that once. WMP isn't a great choice for a burner program. i've never burned anything with it but i know how if i want to and it's just really wierd. i usually use nero to burn. and cdex to rip.

There is no sig.

When copying CDs, do a direct copy. Don't encode to a (lossy) format first.

Exactly!

Use Winamp to rip to wav (works with the free version, though only at 2x speed) or give your friend a copy of EAC or CDex.

Friends don't let friends use Windows Media Player!

Sounds like it's clipping. i.e., the volume level goes above 100% and cuts off the top of the waveform. This'd only happen on the loudest bits, being the drum beats, and no amount of fiddling with EQ etc will fix it.

CDex to copy to MP3... And whatever the default Data Disc maker is in windows xp.
My CD player plays MP3 files, so I don't really worry about burning all that much.

Suggestion, next time you rip it, get CDex to extract it at 320kbps and then transfer it to CDA. The sound quality will be pretty good that way.
320 may seem like overkill, but I love good quality sound. Ogg is great too, but my player can't play ogg. ^_^

Uh .. as a couple of people have already pointed out WR, this is the wrong approach.

You should be ripping to .WAV and then burning to CD direct from the .WAV file. If you want to keep a compressed copy on your hard disc this should be done after you have burned the CD.

Or as Nobby says, just get a proper CD program and copy the damn thing. You can do this in literally two or three clicks and never need to worry about any intermediate files, Wav or MP3. If you want you can automatically add stuff like CD Text as well.
