id3v2 tag question

I'm currently using winamp v2.91 and there is something that keeps happening to my mp3's that i don't initiate or know about until i notice it one day. it keeps happening and i have to re-copy all my mp3's from cds again. what winamp does, is it creates id3v2 tags for a range of my songs based on their filenames. This in turn, updates the 'date modified' of that range of songs to the current date, ruining my favorite way to organize my songs, by 'date modified'. I just realized this happened again last night for about the 5th time. It created id3v2 tags for all my mp3's with filenames ranging from g to t, thus changing the date modified on al lof them. Now, once again i have to reload those songs from cd's to get back my original 'date modifed' info on them. Does anyone know why this happens, if it's a bug or a feature, and if i should upgrade to a newer version on winamp to correct it? This is driving my crazy!!

You should absolutely upgrade to 5.04

Winamp 2.91 is old buggy & not supported.
Winamp 5 is the continuation of the 2.9x line (current version = 5.04).

However, Winamp doesn't automatically update tags, not unless you manually do it, or if you've installed some 3rd-party plugin with this feature.

It sounds more to me like the old Windows Media Player 9 issue, where it silently updates tags in the background.

WMP > Tools > Options > Media Library AND Privacy tabs:
Uncheck: "Update my music files by retreiving missing media information from the Internet"
