Jay-Z, Outkast, No Doubt Lead VMA Nominations
(LAUNCH, 07/27/2004 1:00 PM) By Lyndsey Parker The 2004 MTV Video Music Awards nominations were announced this morning (Tuesday, July 27), and in somewhat of a surprise, Jay-Z leads the field with recognition in six categories, including Best Video Of The Year, for his controversial, Mark Romanek-directed "99 Problems." The clip is also up for Best Male Video, Best Rap Video, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Following closely behind in the VMA race are Outkast ("Hey Ya"), Beyonce ("Naughty Girl" and "Me, Myself & I"), and No Doubt ("It's My Life"), who received five nominations each, and Britney Spears, Usher, Kanye West, the White Stripes, and relatively unknown New Zealand rockers Steriogram, with four nods apiece. Other big contenders this year include D12, Jet, the Black Eyed Peas, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Modest Mouse (three nominations), and Jessica Simpson, Maroon 5, Hoobastank, the Darkness, Christina Aguilera, and Franz Ferdinand (two nominations). The Best New Artist category will be a showdown between Aussie retro-rock band Jet, teen pop/soul sensation JoJo, producer-turned-superstar Kanye West, punk-poppers Yellowcard, British glam-metal revivalists the Darkness, and adult pop band Maroon 5. The Viewer's Choice Award competition will be a little different this year, conducted over four elimination rounds featuring 40 artists. Along with many of the acts mentioned above, other competitors in the Viewer's Choice playoffs include 50 Cent, the Beastie Boys, Chingy, Sean Paul, Nelly, Kelis, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, J-Kwon, and Switchfoot. The Viewer's Choice Award is the only category that is voted on exclusively by fans. The 2004 VMA trophies will be handed out Sunday, August 29 at Miami's American Airlines Arena--the first time in the VMAs' 21-year history that the ceremony will not take place in either New York or Los Angeles. Scheduled to perform are Hoobastank, Jet, Jessica Simpson, Usher, Kanye West, and Yellowcard, with others to be announced.
