double pop @ mp3 start

Hi all,

Out of the blue winamp has begun to make a loud double pop at beginning of every mp3 it plays.

It even shows up on the oscilloscope. I had been using winamp 3 because win98se crashes everytime I try and use 5.05. I reinstalled 2.78 and that fixed the problem until I rebooted my machine. I've repeated this a couple times. I want to use winamp.. but this is a pain. Using kx drivers. Any suggs?

Thanks.

First, Winamp3 v.10 is dead and no longer supported here. Winamp 2.78 is no longer supported here. Matter of fact, no previous build/version of Winamp other than 5.05 is supported any longer.

Next, if you upgrade to Winamp 5.05, it fixes many bugs and security issues, including this major security issue (also mentioned in more detail here).

Your system should not crash at all using Win98se with Winamp 5.05. Something else must be causing the problem - some other conflict. I'm using Winamp 5.05 FULL on an ancient Win95 PII box with no problems at all.

Okay... that being said, and although I shouldn't really help anybody with as old a version as 2.78, I'll suggest one thing...

Popping and crackling problems are often solved with DirectSound tweaking. So I'll refer you to DJ Egg's post to try these DirectSound tweaks. Maybe you can get a foothold on the problem and apply it to your old unsupported version of Winamp.

If the tweaks don't help, you can come back here and post in this thread for further help but only if using Winamp 5.05. Of course at that time we'll probably need system specs from you, a HijackThis log, etc, etc, to help you troubleshoot what it is on your system that is causing Winamp 5.05 to crash, and help to fix your conflict/problem.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

I don't know about kx drivers but mine (m-audio) contain an option to 'Reset Samplerate When Idle' that can cause clicks at the start and end of files.

Btw, try installing 5.05 without the Sonic ripping/burning engine (and maybe also modern skin support).

Edit: Heh, this time Nunzio was faster.
