Winamp Default
Ok I have read all the other postings and I can't find anything on this. Here is my question/problem.
I installed winamp, so I can listen to Shoutcast, however, whenever I click on a station in shoutcast, it opens in my windows media player, which will not play shoutcast stations. So how do I get it to open in winamp? I already read all the instructions in winamp that it says to make it a default player and it still opens in media player. Help please! |

Hmmm.. strange. SHOUTcast uses the .pls playlist format. I was unaware that recent versions of WMP auto-hijack .pls files but it seems that that's the case.
Now I refuse to install/use any version of Windows Media Player more recent than the old WMP 6.4 on my system, so I'm unfamiliar with how to unassociate file types from more recent versions of WMP. But I'll leave that part up to you and your installation of WMP (which you should be familiar with). Do this... 1. Close Winamp 5.05. Open Windows Media Player. Un-associate the .pls file-type and all other file types that you don't want WMP to play and would rather have Winamp play. Then close WMP. 2. Open Winamp. Press CTRL+P to open Winamp Preferences > General Preferences > File Types > Associated File Types list. Associate (highlight) PLS from the list of Associated File Types in Winamp, and any others that you want Winamp to play (matter of fact I'd select all of them). Also while still in Winamp Preferences, enable the Winamp Agent to prevent WMP from hijacking or stealing back file associations --> General Preferences > File Types > Winamp agent > CHECK "Enable Winamp agent". Then close Winamp for all changes to take effect. Now, for good measure do this too... Open Winamp. Create a small playlist file in Winamp and save it with a .pls extension (not the default .m3u extension). Remember where you saved it. Close Winamp. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to browse to the .pls file you just created. While holding the SHIFT key down, right-click on that .pls file and select "Open With..." (not Open). In the resulting dialog box choose Winamp from the list (if not listed then browse to winamp.exe), highlight/select it, CHECK "Always use this program to open this type of file", and press the OK button. Now, when using your browser to visit SHOUTcast, all .pls files should now open and stream through Winamp and not WMP. Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads. Thank you so much! It worked after I did the "extra" step you said at the bottom.
