Question America Or The UK? Best Rock Bands........

Which country has produced the best rock groups over the last forty years or so and why? Should be a pretty provocative little thread.......good job I didn't include Europe. Not that they've ever been responsible for much in the way of rock n' roll.....

They both have some kickass bands. As do other countries.

I wouldn't say it's anything about the actual countries, to be honest. And both countries have really shitty rock bands coming out of them too - the US has Nickelback, POD... UK has The Strokes... just for a start...

I don't really listen to very many bands from the UK, but if you must make mention to them, it's a shame if you don't mention Judas Priest...

Apart from the Smashing Pumpkins, there are very few US rock bands that I like. On the other hand, I like a lot of UK bands : The Smiths, New Order, The Cure, Mogwai, Placebo, Muse...

Though one of most hated bands (Beatles) was from the UK

Kurt Cobain couldn't sing or play guitar all that great. The only real thing they did was 'define' grunge which is just another name for 'punk'.

In my opinion atleast.

True in a way but each one I listed pretty much defined the tops in their genre. No one can really dispute the popularity of any of the bands listed since each one was not only popular then but remain so. There are still pilgramages to Paris to find Morrisons grave, people still listen to Dark Side of the Moon, Metallica is still filling arenas and fans of Nirvana and Alice in Chains still have candlelight vigils every year on the day of their members deaths.

There are alot of bands who have been popular, but I picked the ones I could best think of that five, ten, twenty years or more and they are just as well known as they were when they first started.

One question for anybody that thinks they know. Do the members of a band define where they are from or just where the band originated?

Simple, yes, but good? Fucking-a. Anyone who hasn't listened to enough Beatles Doesn't like them. You have to like something the Beatles made. If you don't than you haven't listened to all of thier stuff and you're being narrow minded. They were very ecclectic in style so it's like saying you hate Ween because you hate "Voodoo Lady". Not all of thier shit sounds the same so you can't blanket them with such a broad statement.

I never said I didn't like something of theirs, Rocky racoon is kick ass. What I did say has to do with the way they revoice all of the same chord progressions. Do you study music? Most people who have would agree with me, although I have met some fans that understand the writing of music very well. And yes I have heard enough beatles to make that judgement, I stand by what I said.

Edit: And I never said all of there shit sounds the same. My ear has been trained to listen to the foundation and structure of music so I guess you could say I've been ruined for most popular music.

I don't doubt you know music better than I do, but to listen to just the chords and refuse to listen to a song as a whole is a really bad way to approach music. There are so many players out there who say "Man that shit is cake! Anybody can do that song!" But it's the fact that it is a good song as a whole, not just musically.

And modern pop music is garbage.

Um... why does it have to be a contest? If it weren't for the influences from either side of the pond, rock music wouldn't be the same.

If it weren't for some of the British bands Raz posted, I wouldn't have listened to some of the Americans. Vice versa.

Besides, Oasis sucks.

The United Kingdom's bands paved the way for current U.S. Rock. Although I do think that the Ramones (From the Velvet Underground in the U.S.) set a milestone. They're really the only one American band that comes to mind when I think 'rock revolution'.

What do you commoly see when US bands refer to their influences?

The Who
Black Sabbath
Led Zepelin
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
Sex Pistols
And many more...

All these bands a from the UK. Now while there are some US bands who have created their own genres for themselves I personally think that the rock music of today was heavily founded and influenced by the early UK bands.
Even bands like Rush, Queen and Kiss, Metallica were influencial, but when you read what their influences are it comes back down to those I listed, plus many more UK bands.

It's a chain reaction really. Look at a band like Metallica (one of the biggest bands of the modern era), their influences were bands like Black Sabbath, and look at the bands that where influenced by Metallica; the modern metal and rock bands, SlipKnoT, TOOL, etc.
So as you can see, the way in which a band evolves is the way it presents it's influences through it's own music. But I think the prime strand in that evolutionary sequence was the early UK rock bands.

I do agree with deeder.
I think the main question in all of this is however the influence that UK had of the time, not wheather they are the best or not.

Amen. I agree totaly.

And all this talk about the UK influencing the rock of today is subjective. If you look at their influences you would get blues and jazz from the states and the pioneer of this genre (even if I don't care for much of his stuff) is indisputably Elvis. If you keep going back all of the chord structures and forms that we hear today were started by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. So depending on what time you are looking at the Germans influenced current music then the Americans and then the UK so they all win the 'contest' in my opinion.

And fickle I agree it is a bad way to listen to popular music but once you learn you can't unlearn.

How very true......

It's the same with Scottish bands though.....

Point aside, British bands have generally been more experimental, so more genres originated here. That's not to say we have the best bands, there's not much to pick and choose.

Yes I have seen an ugly popstar but not lately, mick jager, lead singers for journey, ac/dc and nasty ass gene simmons.
