Track length error (I used the search) :)

Did many searches to find out about track lengths not being displayed properly. I believe one of the mods (which has a good way with words) suggested using a program called VBRFix to fix tracks not displaying the correct time in winamp. This worked for me however it converted a directory of mp3's to vbr. Tracks display nicely now but I dont want them to be vbr if there not. How can I fix these problem files without converting them to vbr?

Thanks

Mike

**EDIT**
I am now remembering trying to fix this problem over a year ago. If I go into a directory of mp3's (an album) when I load them into winamp and click on each file in the playlist and do a Alt+3 to bring up the id tags and what not, in the MPEG info section it looks all screwy and it differs per file ie here is what some of them say.

Size: 5263919 bytes
Header found at: 270 bytes
Length: 877 seconds
MPEG 1.0 layer 3
48kbit, 36554 frames
48000Hz Mono
CRCs: Yes
Copyrighted: Yes
Original: Yes
Emphasis: CITT j.17

Size: 7422996 bytes
Header found at: 221 bytes
Length: 463 seconds
MPEG 1.0 layer 1
128kbit, 12887 frames
32000Hz 2 Channel
CRCs: No
Copyrighted: No
Original: Yes
Emphasis: None

Size: 7417358 bytes
Header found at: 234 bytes
Length: 2472 seconds
MPEG 2.0 layer 3
24kbit, 95094 frames
22050Hz Mono
CRCs: No
Copyrighted: Yes
Original: No
Emphasis: 50/15 microsec

Something is wrong obviously. I believe it was a program I used call JJ MP3 Renamer. I remember it was known for batch writing id tags quick including idtag 2 and I think thats how most of my colection is ruined. I ant my tracks to display correctly again and would love to know what to do. Thanks for reading

vbrfix doesn't convert anything.
If the mp3's aren't vbr (ie. they're cbr) then it just says "no vbr header found" and leaves them as is.

Yes, something is definitely wrong there.
Either those files are totally corrupt, or they've got the wrong extension (eg. they're .zip files or albumwrap files).
If they ARE straightforward MP3 files, then I suggest you stop using whatever crappy mp3 encoder you used and use LAME_Enc instead.

Yea they are mp3's but its not the encoder I used. Its that jj mp3 renamer program used awhile ago. Maybe the files are corrupt but they still play fine. Is there any program I can use to fix the isue at hand?

allcaps (Mike)...

Egg already answered that question for you in his response, and the answer is VBRfix. I say this because you had initially said...
... a program called VBRFix to fix tracks not displaying the correct time in winamp. This worked for me ...
So what this tells me (and should also tell you btw) is that those MP3s had to have been vbr MP3s, else VBRfix wouldn't have touched them and would have just said "no vbr header found", as DJ Egg posted above, and which of course also negates this other part of your statement...
... however it converted a directory of mp3's to vbr
So now you know 2 things, which I'll list, but I'll also tell you a 3rd...
1. Using VBRfix, no non-vbr MP3s were ever compromised/converted

2. The vbr MP3s that were fixed by VBRfix prior to using that "JJ MP3 Renamer" program, did in fact display correct time lengths due to the fix

3. Use VBRfix again to re-repair all the damaged/corrupted vbr MP3 headers (perhaps damaged by that program) and then dump that program and if you ever need to mass-change ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags in the future, use the Mp3Tag Utility instead, which has never caused that problem for me, and has never caused a problem for anyone else I know

VBRFix wont change any files that aren't VBR... I will have to try this out with several directoris of mp3's and if some aren't changed to vbr then I will know thats right but I had prelabeled the one directory to 192k before using the jj mp3 renamer program. Maybe my files are unrepairable and I will have to live with the tracks being wrong in the display. I will do some testing and I hope I have my problem resolved. Thanks for the quick replys!

*EDIT*

K, already did 3 folders of mp3's that were labeled 192k and your right like usual, only one of my mp3's out of 3 albums were vbr. All the files are fixed though with the time so VBRFix does modify them in some way right? Its no converting them to vbr but it fixed the header info? So happy I could scream
