Queen: Yay or Nay?
I think Queen are one of the ultimate greats, but apprantely thgey have taken a bit of a battering in the US since the "I want to break free" video where they were in drag.
So Queen, yay or nay? |

Bands that are made up of, or fronted by homosexuals generally have a hard time in the US anyhow.
Radio interview with a famously gay lead singer of a band in the UK recently had this nugget in it..."we were doing ok in the states until they found out we were a couple of poofs and then the hits dried up" As regards the Queen question, naturally a Yay, amazing to think it's like 13 years since Freddie died, I can recall in detail most of what I did that day, it was such a shock, although not unexpected. Wierd the things your mind can store up... |

Freddie was one of the best singers I've ever heard. They get a huge YAY.

That get a medium yay! from me. A good band but not my favourite, especially dome their 80's stuff is quite irritating.

At least John Deacon has had the decency to call it a day.
I really hate it when people do stuff like this, as it's never as good as the original incarnation, yeah ok, it may be good on it's own level, but it never matches the originals. They should start new band up together if they wanna play that badly instead of humping Freddies corpse... |

You may consider it, if awarded a back-stage pass.

I don't know,
I mean Brian May is one of the greatest guitarists in the entire history of rock(just think about how often he's imitated but never duplicated ). Yes Freddie died, and I cried for like a month, in these 30 minute long jags, just torrential downpours of tears. Still, I think Freddie would be cool with them touring. Didn't he write "The Show Must Go On"? He was blessed in the sense that he knew he had AIDS and knew his fate. So he was able to make a final album with Queen, a grand opus, very big, and very bombastic(much like Mercury himself, or at least his stage persona). I don't think he would want us to put Queen and the music on such a high pedestal as to never again see them tour, or hear them perform again. I mean he was a virtuoso as a lead singer, and a brilliant composer/songwriter. Almost no one can live up to him, but then why should they? As long as people are smart enough to realize that they're going to see an awesome show with a good singer, and the great Brian May, and Roger Taylor, then they'll be fine. They'll have a great time. If the fans want to shell out the bucks, and two of the remaining members want to put on a show, why shouldn't they? I can't help but get this image in my mind. It's of Freddie, with that smile of his, hanging out in heaven. He's probably best friends with Oscar Wilde(similair sense of humor and all), and they're gleefully laughing at all us mere mortals stuck here on earth, arguing about whether or not Queen is so sacred that they should never tour again. I'm also laughing at myself. Laughing because I live in San Francisco, and am so insulated in the notion that everyone regardless of race, creed, sexual preference or tax bracket should be respected equally. I totally had no idea that most of America would actually not buy albums or go see shows of bands with gay lead singers(I mean Elton John releases albums and goes on tour in the states all the time, find me a bigger poof than Sir Elton) just because they're gay. You would think I would have realized that after the last election, but it just didn't cross my mind. |

I also think its cool that everyone in the band wrote a song here and there and they could all sing. Freddies musical talents can never be equaled.

Don't really care about Queen's music but I have to say that it sort of annoys me when a male gay performer feels the need to appear in drag just to make the point that he's gay.
It bothers me, even with artists that I do like musically. |

Say, Twilightseer,
Will you give me some examples? I'm just curious. I have seen many performers dress in drag(male and female, Annie Lenox anyone?). They aren't all gay, and those who are, aren't all making a point of being gay. I mean look at glam rock, tons of hot guys, many of whome(excuse spelling please) are straight but brilliant because they realize an average looking guy, when all dolled up can score loads more groupies than just an average looking guy. Ummm Elton John glams it up, but then he allways has, he's fey that way. Same thing with Boy George, he was way femme, long before deciding to have a career as a singer/songwriter, though we do forget he's a songwriter as well as a singer. There's a ton of examples like those two. I'm not the least bit offended or annoyed. I'm just not, though I respect that you are. Now if you're referring to Queen's video for "I Want To Break Free" then I'm afraid you're way off base there. I myself am a huge fan of British comedy, everything from Monty Python, to Benny Hill, to oh heck, Absolutely Fabulous, and then some. Men in dresses are a huge staple of British comedy, and indeed comedy in general(Eddie Izzard is the only comic I can think of who wears women's clothing and makeup just for the sake of wearing women's clothing and makeup, and he says he's straight and would be a lesbian if he even had a sex change which he won't because he's a transvestite and not a transsexual, and god bless him for realizing that it's okay to be yourself and anyone who doesn't like it can kiss your well pedicured feet). Why did I write that incredibly long and what may sound like Off Topic paragraph? I wrote it because "I Want To Break Free" is meant to be comedy. Didn't you notice how each memeber was a different prototype of woman, with Freddie and Roger vamping it up with the best of them? In that specific video John Deacon is my favorite "woman". Why? Because he's got that full on matronly "Hell's Grannies" thing going on, pure Python, hee. Of course there was Freddie's video for "The Great Pretender" where he dresses as various characters. It would have been genius if Bowie hadn't done it first and better in his "Boys Keep Swingin'" video, but then David Bowie had/has an unfair advantage over Freddie because he's just downright pretty. I'm sorry, I think I just ranted all over you. I didn't mean to. I also didn't mean to get all, incoherant. I just don't understand what you mean. So please, some examples, would be more than appreciated. BTW don't even bother using the lead singer of Scissor Sisters as an example, because he was a go-go dancer before joining/starting the band. Those guys are notorious for being glam-tastically girly. |

Freddie Mercury was a HUGE flamer.
Just the way he would strut across the stage made me give him 3 snaps up. He was also a fine damn singer and very talented writer.

Hey ShyShy, was he a fine damn singer or a damn fine singer, or both?
When I first read your post I totally thought you were saying he was fine as in "h-o-t, hot". Then I realized you probably mean he was a really good singer. Still I just thought it was kind of funny how a phrase can sound completely different when just a couple of words get switched around.

Freddie Mercury rocked as a front man, gay or not...
Like I said before: Look at Rob Halford of Judas Priest...He's gay, but does it matter when you're around a really good band? Queen were great. The band after Mercury, though, is not what I'd call "Queen", to be honest. Still good, not quite the same combination of elements though.

I think Brian May once played with GNR for a fill one night (After Slash left)...
Imagine Brian May with Axle Rose...
