Punkcrib,
In response to your post, I'm amazed your PC can boot up at all let alone run any other software. You have far too many unnecessary programs loading and running at startup. Word to the wise learn how to do some housekeeping and ditch AOL. |

hellllllp! for a newbie?
I too am new to this forum, chancing upon it while trying to find a fix for the problems discussed here in this thread.
I installed winamp 5 so I could listen to SHOUTcast Radio at the invitation of this girl I know and it does the same thing, runs for a few secs them off, runs again for a few then off... re buffering over and over apparently. I am running Windows 98, a dial up, use both Adaware and Spybot search and destroy... my HJT log looks like this... Ok, it's not the same problem - because 1) there's no winhelp32.dll in your log and 2) the problem in this sticky is that Winamp and ALL sound cuts out after 4 seconds and can't be got back without rebooting - whereas you've just got a rebuffering issue, which is probably just down to the fact that you're trying to listen to streams with a too high bitrate over a dial-up connection (a 56k dial-up modem can only really handle streams of 32kbps and lower).
However, there are a few spyware/malware items in your log. So, what I'm going to do is post my response here, then split both your and my post into a new thread later.... _______________________________________________________________________ First, you have a CoolWebSearch infection, so please download, install and run CWShredder first. You will need to print out these instructions first, because you MUST close all browser and Explorer windows before running CWShredder. It's also recommended to do the same before running SpybotSD & Adaware. Next, run both SpybotSD and AdawareSE again, and make sure you've got the latest definition updates for both programs before running the scans. Then, run HJT again, and if any of the following entries still exist, place a checkmark next to them and click "fix selected items": These are the CWS infection entries: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about :blank R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sp.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q= These are the adware/spyware entries (eXact Advertising and BlazeFind) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSBE.DLL O2 - BHO: (no name) - {83DE62E0-5805-11D8-9B25-00E04C60FAF2} - C:\WINDOWS\2_0_1browserhelper2.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {002EB272-2590-4693-B166-FBD5D9B6FEA6} - C:\WINDOWS\MULTIMPP.DLL O8 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates - file://C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES\Sy1150\Tp1150\scri1150a.htm These are trojans/viruses (Unknown? and IMIServ): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pmkfqluwjrum] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CAUSZBYU.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe When they've all been disabled, reboot and then delete the following files if they still exist: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sp.html C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSBE.DLL C:\WINDOWS\2_0_1browserhelper2.dll C:\WINDOWS\MULTIMPP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CAUSZBYU.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES (delete this folder) _______________________________________________________________________ It also seems to me that you've simply got too much crap loading at startup, most of which are non-essential resource hoggers. Although the following aren't malware and are quite legit, I also suggest that you use HJT to disable them: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disc Detector] C:\Program Files\Creative\ShareDLL\CtNotify.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegisterDropHandler] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\BIN\REGIST~1.EXE O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O4 - Startup: WKCALREM.LNK = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkCalRem.exe and delete some of those ActiveX Controls (Downloaded Program Files): O16 - DPF: {C606BA60-AB76-48B6-96A7-2C4D5C386F70} (PreQualifier Class) - http://www.verizon.net/checkmypc/includes/MotivePreQual.cab O16 - DPF: {01FE8D0A-51AD-459B-B62B-85E135128B32} (DD_v4.DDv4) - http://www.drivershq.com/DD_v4.CAB _______________________________________________________________________ But, like I said, seeing there's also other concurrently running software using your connection (mainly Messenger & AIM), you probably just don't have enough spare bandwidth left to handle the shoutcast streams . . . though removing all those viruses & adware/spyware items might help a bit... You can also increase the "streaming data buffer" value and prebuffer sliders in: Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > in_mp3.dll > config > Streaming tab. |

@Daedalus123
Please print out these instructions. First, you will need to download the following free software. 1. LSPFix 2. CWShredder 3. Spybot Search & Destroy | download 4. Adaware SE IMPORTANT: Close all browser and Explorer windows! Right click the Taskbar and open Task Manager (or use: Ctrl+Alt+Del) End process for the following: voymaiqq.exe [qebztmsays] bargains.exe Close Task Manager. Run LSPFix first. This will fix the broken Winsock LSP files. Next, install and run CWShredder. Simply click the Fix button and let CWShredder do its thing. (again, make sure all browser and Explorer windows are closed first). Now go to Add/Remove Programs Control Panel and uninstall both Go!Zilla (Aureate/Radiate spyware) and Flashget. These are both known spyware apps, and could well be the source of your problems. Now install SpybotSD and make sure you get the latest detection files before running the scan (you will be prompted to get updates during installation). Once the scan is complete, checkmark all items found and click "fix selected items". Full instructions can be found here You may need to run SpybotSD scan more than once. Once SpybotSD reports "Congratulations. No immediate threats found", now it's time to install and run Adaware SE. Again, make sure you get the latest detection updates before running the Adaware scan. Finally, run HJT again, and if any of the following entries still exist, checkmark them and click "fix selected items": IE Driver SearchBar and Hyperbar StartNow browser hijacker entries: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchBar.htm R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R3 - URLSearchHook: HyperSearchHook - {83628101-438E-466D-B1E2-99F8850F4222} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\HyperbarSS3.dll O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com TwainTech adware / browser hijacker: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll BookedSpace adware entry: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-AB2D-8D32436313D9} - C:\WINDOWS\bsx5.dll Related Links / LinksBar spyware/hijacker: O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\lbbho.dll - {3F9B9E31-E6B2-4E72-8745-515C5AC7B5A0} - C:\WINDOWS\lbbho.dll BlazeFind adware/hijacker: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {83DE62E0-5805-11D8-9B25-00E04C60FAF2} - C:\WINDOWS\2_0_1browserhelper2.dll (file missing) Flingstone/WinFavorites hijacker/trojan: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C691A33-7DDA-4C2F-BE4C-C176083F35CF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\bridge.dll (file missing) Septic.a trojan / browser hijacker: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll O3 - Toolbar: Band Class - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll eXact Advertising (BargainBuddy) adware/hijacker: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll Unknown hijacker: O3 - Toolbar: Search - {3DD31846-4895-17A7-9911-30E8CDE458B0} - C:\WINDOWS\Wetgifnk.dll (file missing) Dodgy startup items (voymaiqq is an unknown trojan; bsx5.dll = BookedSpace adware, as above): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qebztmsays] C:\WINDOWS\System32\voymaiqq.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxsx5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\bsx5.dll,DllRun FlashGet and Go!Zilla remnants: O3 - Toolbar: FlashGet Bar - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\fgiebar.dll O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with Go!Zilla - file://C:\Program Files\Go!Zilla\download-with-gozilla.html O8 - Extra context menu item: Ontvang alles met FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm O8 - Extra context menu item: Ontvang met FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MaxSpeed (HKLM) O9 - Extra button: 50 FREE MP3s! If needs be, post a new HJT log when done. Good luck. |

Hmm, ok, it's looking better, but it's still not right.
First of all, upgrade HJT to v1.98.2 (unzip HijackThis.exe, thus overwriting your old version). BargainBuddy spyware (Exact Advertising) is still listed as a running process: C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\bin\bargains.exe However, there's nothing in your HJT log calling it, so we'll definitely need to see a new log generated by v1.98.2 Both SpybotSD and AdawareSE should've fixed and removed BargainBuddy. See if there's an entry for it in Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, and try uninstall it from there. You were also supposed to delete the "C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network" folder afterwards. The following entry also still needs fixing: O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MaxSpeed (HKLM) Because there's still some "010" entries referencing a problem with Winsock LSP, you should run LSPFix again! This time, close all browser & Explorer windows and ALSO disconnect from the internet before running LSPFix. You may even need to uninstall and then reinstall Google Desktop Search, because it looks like the files could be corrupted. And I still also recommend that you remove all those 016 - DPF entries (ActiveX Controls) that I referenced in my first reply. Whilst your at it, clear out your internet cache (IE Options Control Panel > Temporary Internet Files > Delete), and empty the contents of your Temp folder ("c:\documents and settings\(username)\local settings\temp"). Re: winhlp32 Where exactly is it located? Is it winhlp32.dll or winhlp32.exe What icon is it? The default Windows Help question mark icon, or the dodgy yellow one with the 'Z' in the middle, or other? Also, is your Norton AV up-to-date, and have you tried running a full scan? Once we've seen a clean HJT log, I also recommend a clean install of Winamp 5.06. And please include some basic system specs with your next post. |

Something really strange I just noticed: The winhlp32 file is 8kb in size. Sowhere else in this topic is is mentioned that the original file is 8kb, and the file that makes winamp crash is 200+ kb. So it might not be the winhlp32 problem after al?
I'll continue to remove spyware and seem if the problem gets solved |

DJ Egg...
I have attempted your instructions but I can't get past running AdAware... it freezes on the "deleting selected", just after the quarenteen operation. I've down loaded and reinstalled it but it still does the same, any suggestions? I did go ahead and run SpyBot Search and Destroy and eliminated some items but there are still about 126 OTHER items showing in AdAware. By the way, I for one am thankful for you and others like you that help people like us who are the targets of others who are less than "nice", and think it's alright to simply help themselves to access to something belonging to others without invitation. I am glad to see the laws giving spammers their just due, now it's time to go after the rest of their like! Bob in Missouri |

W00t!
I finnaly found out what the problem was! It has nothing to do with spyware or anything, it's related to the files in the plugin folder and the skin folder. (I copied my old plugin files and skins back to my winamp folder after doing a clean install, but now I did another clean instal and forgot to put them back and now winamp works again.) I'll try to find exactly with plugin or skin is causing the problem by copying them back one by one. Thanks everyone who helped me |

fungi... i don't see anything that just jumps out at me as being suspicious. did this randomly start in the middle of a winamp session? also, might i recomend a complete fresh uninstall/reinstall. also, try removing all plugins, etc etc. if you go to one of the top stickies in the tech forum you can find the whole uninstall/install procedure there
When you take a hand and chop the fingers off... what do u get? That would be the knub. |

Yeah, FungiChile should probably have started a new thread, rather than posting in this one.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k This tells us that your system is not entirely stable, ie. this entry will only appear if your system has recovered (automatically rebooted) after a serious error. The only other suspicious entries in your HJT log are: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Archivos de programa\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" Messenger Plus is known to install adware. http://www.google.com/search?q=%22me...plus%22+adware C:\Archivos de programa\Ares\Ares.exe http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/p...x?id=453074674 And there also seems to be a problem with the MSN Toolbar... However, there's nothing in the log that would suggest anything causing a problem similar to the one described in the first post in this thread :/ |

I think I have the same problem. Winamp loads very slowly, the internet radio loads first and says "error intialitizing data base, then the rest loads. When I start playing about 4 sec. The Microsoft error pop up appears with the Winamp has encountered a problem and nneds to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When I send the error report, Winamp closes down. I also ran Norton anti virus which I had updated along with the Internet security. My conclusion is that it has something to do with internet radio or shoutcast. Someone probably put a worm or virus there. However, it would take too long to look for that d==evil winhlp file and I am not a tech expert. So where do you find that HiJackThis? And where are the winhlp files usually located? [Edit --> DJ Egg] No. This is NOT the same problem :/ |

I've had the same problem of this one second start and stop, uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling has resotred it to running condition but the problem returns. Win amp 5.07 can be running and sounding good, I might check my mail, or perform any other task, it doesn't matter what it is, and win amp will some times freeze up in the middle of playing a song and then when you go to restart the song it goes one second and stops and will not play, everything else works, I don't have a problem with the winhlp files, nortons current, no bugs, adaware. spybot nothing suspicious, nor anything obvious in startup, system tray etc.

You don't want me to read all that, do you? I have the newest version of adaware and I just installed Spyboot. My problem is nearly the same. I can't play videos. After two seconds they stop and my cpu using rate is about 100%. Then I can't close winamp any more and I have to do 'strg+alt+entf'... then the cpu using rate goes back to 10%. I can play audio but with problems.
Thanks for answering |

I had a similar problem with some of the songs in my playlist that have played fine for months, crashed Winamp after about 1 second of playing. I added one of the mp3s that was crashing to the playlist then it played fine, then I deleted it and the old one (plus all the others) magically worked.
Then I resaved the playlist file. |

I've got the same problem, my songs won't play longer than 4 secs and after that my winamp doesn't do anything. The same for other players like sonique...
I searched my system with updated Ad Aware and Spybot. I checked with HJT, but theres no entry of winhlp. I've got a file named winhlp32.exe in my windows directory 268KB and one in my system32 with 8KB. I've got no processes running with that name but I've got the same problem... What can I do? |

@Eiswolf:
Your problem isn't the one this thread is meant for. Please start a new thread, confirming you're using a clean install (i.e. no extra 3rd-party plugins) of the latest version of Winamp (5.08). Also, provide full system specs. I don't see anything suspicious in you HijackThis log, but you can re-attach your log in your new thread. Maybe I missed something. Also try the DirectSound output tweaks. badfish5683@aol: I dunno what's up. Please read this sticky. No luck? Start a new thread providing all necessary info (as outlined in the sticky). |

Sorry, but you really should answer the other questions as well...
Clean install of Winamp 5.09? Tried the DirectSound output tweaks? Full system specs? File format you're playing? Classic/modern skin? Suspicous entries in log (do not fix anything yet!): C:\WINDOWS\Vzdbs.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0lsZOF] C:\WINDOWS\Vzdbs.exe O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4...23/cpbrkpie.cab |

Could you post a new HijackThis log so we can see everything's clean now?
As for the corrupt installer... Did you already try re-downloading it? (Direct download link) Also scan your system for viruses, if you have not already done so. Some online virus scanners Quote:
You still didn't provide system specs. |

Well, the latest log is clean.
I'm not sure why you're having problems redownloading Winamp... If you've still got 5.08e installed, then just reopen it, apply the DirectSound output tweaks, and let us know if the problem is gone. |
