Help - with tempo control, buffer underruns occur. Help!

I have a comp with Win XP Home, 3.4GHz P4, 512MB RAM, and windows says (in device manager) that I have a "C-Media High definition audio device", which is the one that outputs sound.

I used Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio v0.36 with a Tempo/pitch control. I made the tempo faster (hehe! sounds funny!), but the sound skips every few seconds.

I use the DirectSound plugin. Checking its status, every time the sound skips, there is a buffer underrun. (Well, I assume it is this that is making the sound skip.)

How do I fix this problem? If I can't, why not? Is it because my soundcard is crap?

I did the same tempo/pitch control on a comp with a 800MHz P3, 256MB RAM. Windows says the soundcard is a "Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128". Everything is fine. I could turn the tempo all the way up, and I could hear super-fast songs without any skipping.

I *don't* think my computer is slow (see above)! I assume that it is the soundcard's fault.

Please would someone explain or help, as this is really getting on my nerves. The sound is turning out to be quite disappointing. (I am a power user :-)

Is it an onboard sound chip (as opposed to a proper pci soundcard)?
If so, check the motherboard manufacturer's site for updated drivers (chipset / onboard sound / etc), and also make sure you've got DirectX 9.0c (default with WinXP is 8.1, though 9.0c is installed with XP sp2).

Apart from that, it'd do no harm to invest in a proper sound card.
90%+ of all onboard sound chips are crap.
Though C-Media aren't exactly renowned for making decent pci cards either :/

For now, you could also try these DirectSound Output tweaks:

Lol, I think I've seen a pattern.

For some reason, WMA tracks that my brother ripped to our hard disk cause buffer underruns, ie. sound skipping when speeding up songs.

However my MP3s seem to speed up to the full 2x speed without any problems.

At least I've got it (partially)! ty DJ Egg - I think it is an onboard sound-chip. And I know *not* to buy from C-Media again... I also have DX 9c.

Ah, you didn't mention that they were wma files...
WMA is a proprietary Microsoft format, and support is limited due to licensing restrictions.
