2.6 or 3.0..My system doesn't qualify for 5

I have a laptop PC running Windows ME and I have 2.6 installed (I think it was installed when I installed Netscape 4.7, because it's in tne Netscape folder). I also have 3 (which is on the C drive in a folder called Install Winamp) but its not installed. I don't have the right system requirements for 5x.

What's are my options.. should I stay with 2.6...does it have a serious security breach like 3? Is 2.6 safe? If an upgrade is needed...do I need to uninstall 2.6 before I upgrade?

I'll be honest ....I'm a Mac user...and someone gave me this PC four months ago..since then I've been trying to update the software, but the more I update the slower and louder the computer gets. So if I can get away with 2.6 that would great.

Thank you in advance,
Deb

Try installing Winamp 5 LITE. Or download the FULL version, and just uncheck the features you don't need (Moderns Skin Support, Burning & Ripping Support, etc.). Winamp 5 is the direct continuation of Winamp 2, with bug fixes and new features (which you can uncheck in the installer). No, the security breach affecting WA3 and earlier version of WA 5 (with Modern Skin Support installed) does not affect 2.6. There are other security fixes since that version though: bug fixes

You should be able to install Winamp 5 just on top of Winamp 2.6, but if you want to be sure no (maybe earlier installed) 3rd-party plugins are messing up, uninstall the old install first: clean install instructions

For hints and tips to run Winamp on older systems: Winamp: Like the Wind

As for Winamp3: Winamp3 is considered to use more resources than Winamp 5, so I wouldn't recommend installing it.

What's the cpu & ram specs?
If too low to support modern skins, just use a classic skin instead :/

Wow, I didn't know that Macs could run winamp! (if that was obvious, sorry, but I am slow :-)

My advice is : for performance, use Winamp 2. I had a 333Hz P2, 128MB ram, some Yamaha onboard sound. It worked fine. I don't know if it is secure, but I would risk it! (Not recommended if your machine is used for business, etc.)

Winamp 5 with a classic skin runs perfectly fine on my old P2 266 (overclocked to 310) and it was working fine whilst running it, another instance and developing all of my winamp plugins so i don't understand people's issues with not having enough Mhz

Macs can't run any recent version of Winamp. There was a macamp a long time ago, but it was scrapped.

Thanks you.....

Thank you everyone for all the replies and info. Winamp looks like a great program..nicer looking than Soundjam MP I use on my Mac. I haven't got around to really working with Winamp (as far as prefs, personalizing, skins etc. )but will soon.

Is the real output finalizer in the speakers, or are programs, hardware, processors etc. a big part also?

Thanks again,
Deb
