Wells Fargo Atms now Windows based and web-enabled!! FUDGE!

http://www.computerworld.com/softwar...tml?source=x10

/.

"Wells Fargo has completed a five-year project to Web-enable its 6,200 ATMs in 23 states. Now the ATMS will be Windows based rather than OS/2 based. Avivah Litan, an analyst at Gartner Inc., in Stamford, Conn., said the move to Windows-based systems is "not great news for the security of the system. I'm sure there's a lot of holes that will be created because of this."

/.

Oh dear god no. Granted it was shown that a windows system properly installed with the correct software and configured properly will be more secure than a linux system I think this is a very retarded move, especially because I use Wells Fargo myself (I'm just across the bay from SF)

i believe that study you are referring to failed to install the correct software on the linux system. A properly configured linux system will be more secure.

I would think windows would be more secure than OS/2? Or is it impossible to put OS/2 online since it's so fucking old?

Any operating system is more secure than Windows, of course, even if it is 10 years old. Geez. Don't you know anything?

Read the article before slagging windows off

Another benefit for Wells Fargo is that its newly installed ATM machines all use the Triple Data Encryption Standard, an upgrade being required by credit card companies and related funds-transfer networks, such as MasterCard International Inc. and Visa U.S.A. Inc. The network providers established deadlines starting last year for converting electronic funds networks to the Triple DES. The current standard, DES, has become vulnerable to hacking attacks as a result of increases in computing power.

It looks more like bad marketing than anything else.

No bank would be insane enough to really web-enable their internal systems. Their PR staff merely chose the wrong words ("web-enable", "WebATM") and that invited a round of Windows-bashing. All they are doing is perhaps (1) use a browser to display the front-end; (2) use XML and SOAP to communicate with the back-end, which just happens to be often used as web-related technologies.

With a properly secured internal environment and a restricted user interface (which the ATM is), it's relatively unimportant what the operating system of the front-end is. Given that, it's natural that corporate executives chose to adopt an OS that more people on the market will program for, i.e. Windows.

Want Linux / OpenBSD / <insert your favourite OS here> to be adopted in the corporate world? Train more programmers who are competent in those environments.

yea it is kind of sad how quickly people just jump on the anti-microsoft boat. Any system can be secured, but security is a user issue not a vendor one in my opinion

Here was me thinking this intuition telling me the complete contrary was worth a damn

As for more serious stuff - the "web" stuff is, as griffinn points out, entirely wired to a private network (it's not like they're going to be internet-exposed). TCP/IP works. Why not use it? XML/SOAP/HTTP/HTML etc... we know these things work. They're tried and tested. They could develop proprietary network infrastructures and protocols, since we all know that Security by Obscurity is brilliant. It's not like they're gonna be using code that isn't developed for the ATMs, so the possibility of attacks by malicious code is basically non-existent.
