When someone creates a skin, they specify the font for the Playlist Editor window text. If the playlist entries appear to be symbols or Wingdings, it is usually because the author of that particular skin specified a font that is not included in your Windows Fonts folder.

If you go to your Winamp Skins folder and unzip/decompress the specific skin file, you will find a file named pledit.txt. If you open that file using Notepad, you can see what font was specified for that skin.

You can try to find the specified font on the internet, and add it to your Fonts folder, or you can replace the name of the font with the name of a font that you do have (such as Arial), and then save the edited pledit.txt file.

Another option is to download this plugin:

http://www.winamp.com/customize/deta...mponentId=9471

... it allows you to select or change the Playlist Editor font (it only lets you choose from fonts that you have already installed), and it automatically makes all of your skins use the selected font. It would also prevent the same problem from happening in the future, should you happen to download another "weird" skin.

The Tixoft plugin should work fine with Windows 95/98 - unless your skin's pledit.txt file was read-only(?) or not normal in some other way. Oh well, I guess you'll need to manually open/edit the skin file.

First, close Winamp. Now, let's say the weird skin you downloaded was named WoodAmp. If you look in your Skins folder (usually C:\Program Files\Winamp\Skins), you should either find (1) a folder named WoodAmp (or similar), or (2) a file named woodamp.wsz (or similar).

(1) If you find a folder named WoodAmp, it will contain a bunch of files (mostly BMP files), including a file named pledit.txt. Using Notepad, open pledit.txt, and it should look like this:

[Text]
Normal=#aaaaaa
Current=#bbbbbb
NormalBG=#cccccc
SelectedBG=#dddddd
Font=WeirdWingDing (or whatever)

(aaaaaa, bbbbbb, cccccc, and dddddd represent numbers)

Simply replace WeirdWingDing with a font you normally use, such as Arial, and then save the edited pledit.txt file. When you re-open Winamp and use that skin, the playlist should be displayed in Arial.

(2) If you find a file named woodamp.wsz, change the filename to woodamp.zip, unzip it with WinZip or Power Archiver, edit the pledit.txt file as described above, save the edited file, zip up all the skin files again, change the filename back to woodamp.wsz and it should be fixed.

Please post a reply if you have any further problems.

You might try going to Winamp Preferences (Ctrl+P), selecting Options -> Display, and CHECKING (or UNCHECKING) the box labeled Use bitmap font for main title display to see if it makes any difference (although I don't think it will affect the playlist).

Otherwise, my guess at this point is that you have a skin with corrupted component files. Why don't you give us the name of the skin (and the download source, if not winamp.com), and we can test it ourself.

If any Skinning experts have other suggestions, jump right in here ...

From winamp.com, I downloaded and installed:

Asuka Strikes by Lars Butler:
http://www.winamp.com/customize/deta...ponentId=29366

The pledit.txt file looked like this:

[Text]
Normal=#000000
Current=#0000A0
NormalBG=#8080C0
SelectedBG=#8080FF
Font=Papyrus

Papyrus is not one of my installed fonts, so I edited the last line of the file to read:

Font=Arial

... no problem, the playlist entries were then displayed in Arial.

I also changed the skin's font using the Tixoft plugin with no problem.

So it seems to me the problem is not related to Winamp or that skin. Perhaps you have some weird Windows 95 or language settings glitch? I'm going to move this thread to Technical Support Skins - perhaps one of the experts there can help you.

(Also, please don't bump your thread to the top. The moderators and members help as many users as they have time for. Moving yourself to the top may actually influence people not to help you.)

You need to go into Windows Explorer, click on View, then click on the Folder Options, then click on the View tab. Remove the check next to where it says "Hide file extensions for known file types". Click Ok. Then go back to your skin and right click to rename it to skin.zip. You should be able to unzip it now so you can edit your Pledit.txt
