Virtual time capsule

The saying goes that man is over-optimistic over the short term and over-pessimistic over the long term. It means that we tend to predict far more technological progress five years from now than it actually turns out, and far less progress over 50 years than reality.

Let's treat this thread as a time capsule and do a one-year prediction of technological progress. One year later, we'll revive this thread and see who's closest to the mark.

My prediction: One year from now, electronic paper will start finding mainstream use, and paper will start going out of favour. People will look forward to the invention of electronic toilet paper.

(No, that last part is not part of the real prediction.)

I'd have to say that in the next year, several video game consoles will be replaced by better ones, there will have been at least 2 new sets of 150 Pokemon monsters, and kids will still be obsessed with trading cards.

I predict that the winamp forums will still be over run by n00bs and that we will see Winamp v5.05 by the end of 2004. I also predict that Half-Life 2 will not be released until late 2005 because of "Unexpected Consequences" .

As with Windows, it takes down whatever application you have running on it.

Oops, that would rule out the idea of electronic toilet paper... It's not a good thing to have your ass shut down.

That Blizzard entertainment will still be working on some lame (in comparison) new starcraft game before making Diablo III 'to make sure that the market isn't flooded with numerous spin-off's/expansions.'

Actually the military are behind the market, they can't keep the pace because of the costs and so use the big players in the industry.

The best stuff that isn't a prototype you can get in the high street due to the way competition works. The miliraty will have very specialised versions of things with slight changes here and there. They certainly aren't messing with 7GHz P5's.

I predict that a hole in a microsoft product will sweep across the globe causing havok and costing millions of pounds worth of damage.

have a cell phone, pda, all extensions music palyer, radio, voice recorder, digital/film camera, digital/dvd camcorder, fully functional personal computer (using minidisks), all top of the line, all in one, on the palm of your hand, light enough to carry in your pocket. but that's a distant future

also electronic transparent eye lenses where you can store information and display it on your side of the lens so nothing is seen from the outside. good way to cheat on tests

This thread is some what similar to a Conan O'Brian skit, "in the year 2000".

-Linux Blue will be released by IBM and erode even more of Micro$ofts market share.
-Pentium will create an even more inefficient processor by extending its pipeline to 60 stages in order to squeeze out more clock cycles.
-Winamp will be relabeled AOLamp and included with AOL 11 exclusively ;-)

I thought the object was to predict some thing? LMAO

Off topic..I dunno Phily I remember going to Caterick once for this mad how the signals were doing... This corporal grabs hold of me and gets me to scribble soem stuff on a bit of paper and sends me over to a tent about two hundred mtrs away. I go in there and another soldier type fellow gives me a copy of what I had scribbled ..I had just seen a 'FAX' machine ...thing is they didn't hit the consumer market for at least another 5-6 years! and I know of other similar instances...

Hmm

A marjor can manufacture will make a moddle for the public with a MP3 player instead of a CD player, and an optional upgrade to use other formats.

The time is up.

Electronic paper didn't catch on. However, form factors are proliferating for all sorts of electronic devices (sub-notebooks, ultra-portable notebooks, phone-camera-PDA-computer combos) and wireless networks have become a utility, which sort of fulfills the original objectives of electronic paper.

How well did your predictions fare in the past year?

No, people who bought the game on DVD belived that they were getting the game like any other. So when they had to deal with steam, oh boy. Trouble is, quite a few belvied that Steam was used on all games releaced on DVD.

I tried to educate them, but to be honest, its not worth it.

wireless power will become a much bigger development in coming years and will be a major breakthrough in technology when your PDA phones become completely and forever wireless.

Cells phones in the US will lag further behind than the rest of the world due to large coverage gaps and obscene plan lengths and cancellation penalties.

Firefox 1.1.3 will have 12% of the market share and IE7 will flop.
