Well...not really. Before I had downloaded CD Reader, winamp didn't play my CDs at all, then after I downloaded it, they would play, but with skips. Any suggestions?

Also, i tried to use other programs to play my cds and they don't even recognize a cd as being in the drive. When I put a cd in, it automatically goes to winamp to play it, so i tried uninstalling winamp to see what would happen when i played the cd and it didn't have winamp to play it, and it says it can't find a file called PROGRAM. I think it's associated all audio CDs with winamp, and it won't play outside of winamp, but something's wrong with my winamp. I've tried different versions of winamp, but i have the same problem for each.

Firstly, let's find out if you really can play AudioCD's with other players.
I take it you've got Windows CD Player installed? You should be able to place the CD in the drive, click "okay" to get rid of the error message, then open CDPlayer (C:\Windows\CDPlayer.exe) and click the "play" button. To make it autoplay on insert, goto: Start -> Settings -> Folder Options -> File Types tab Scroll down for "AudioCD" Hi-lite & click "Edit" If there's already an entry for "Play in CDPlayer", hi-lite it & click "set default" button. If not, click "New" & type the following: Action = &Play in CDPlayer Command line = C:\Windows\CDPlayer.exe -play Click "Okay", hi-lite new entry & click "set default" Now tell us whether AudioCD's play okay. If they don't, then there's a problem with either your CD-ROM hardware, wiring or drivers. Goto: System Control Panel -> Device Manager -> CD-ROM -> (device) -> Properties General tab: Does it say "This device is working properly"? What is the make & model of your device? Settings tab: Is the correct drive letter assigned? Which options have you got checkmarked? Which options have you not got checkmarked? If it looks like the CD is playing but you can't hear any sound, goto: Windows Volume Control (little yellow speaker in systray): Make sure Audio CD is selected, not muted, & the level is up high enough. Try these suggestions & answer these questions & then we'll try help you some more. We'll also then know if there's any relevant config settings for Winamp / CDReader. If you still have problems, please include your full sys specs in your reply. |

I did what you said and the device still won't recognize the Audio CD in the drive. The drive has been assigned to the correct letter, but I notice that under the Drivers tab it says none have been loaded...should there be any? I know that before I began using Winamp I could play audio CDs in Windows CD Player. As far as options go... Disconnect and Sync Data Transfer are unchecked, and Auto Insert Notification and DMA are. I'm using a Compaq Presario w/ Win 98...Pentiun II 350 MHz...128MB RAM...9.5GB Hard Drive...
Compaqs come with a diagnostics program built-in so you can test the system, and I saw that my CD-ROM failed a Sequential Read Test, I had a disk in the drive - I don't know if that's significant. |

I wouldn't worry about what it says in the Drivers tab.
Mine says "no drivers are required or have been loaded" too, but the CD-ROM works fine. You could visit the manufacturer's website to see if there's any latest drivers available. Does it say "this device is working properly" in the General tab? If so, you shouldn't have to upload any new drivers. It all depends on your type of CD-ROM, but my settings tab has got "Disconnect" checkmarked & "DMA" unchecked. You might want to try unchecking DMA. Apart from that, do you still get "failed sequential read test" without a disk in the drive? If so, you may need to call on a Compaq technician. Maybe the device is no longer connected / functioning properly? It's weird how you say you could play CD's ok with CDPlayer b4 you installed Winamp. Are you sure you've not installed any potentially dodgy 3rd party plugins, eg. CDA2WAV, etc? RE: CDReader (although this is classed as a 3rd party plugin, I know it to be guaranteed safe 'cos I use it myself with no problems whatsoever): Did you download it from the Winamp.com plugins section? If so, go the author's site & get the latest new & improved version: http://www.url*****~copah/ Good luck! |
