CDDB information

I have a problem with the latest, free Winamp version 5.093.
It seems that it cannot read CD information from CDDB database when i connect to the internet and insert Audio CD.
I ta displays "Succes !" though, but without informations - it just leaves "Unknown artist - Track x"
It worked with earlier versions. I also have installed an older version of winamp on my computer. Could that be the problems ( each winamp is in it's OWN directory ) ?

I would like replies to my email, if it's possible.
Thanks !!!

By 'free' version, did you mean the Full version?
Basically, CDDB does not come with the Lite version.

If the problem persists, please read this before replying.

Full version, ofcourse.
I've tried everything in settings but it seems that there are no any options regarding CDDB.

What's the adress for CDDD and where can I type it ?

Thanks,
bye

This is usually a sign that you are not connecting, so check both instances of Winamp have correct internet settings (Prefs > Gen Prefs > ..) and both have the necessary permissions in your firewall.

To avoid confusion with anything already in Winamp's database, test as follows :

Put the CD in the drive and play a track.
Press <Alt+3> (don't use the numberpad '3')
Click the [CDDB] button.

I don't think there are any settings of the type you want, this is all handled by the plugins.

Are both instances not working or just the one ?

"I would like replies to my email, if it's possible"
Go to 'My control panel' (top of the page) > 'Edit Options' > enable E-Mail Notifications

I connect via dial-up modem and that's the option i have chosen. my firewall program is disabled but there are still no results. It seems like winamp is not comunicating with modem (internet) at all.
I presume that all the necessary plugins are already installed. Should I uninstall the previous version of winamp that's still on my computer ? Could that be the problem ?

Thanks for the tip

Sometimes it is just a matter starting with a "clean CDDB slate". While Winamp is not running, go to the Winamp Plug-ins folder (usually C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins as default). Delete the in_cddb.cdb file or move (or rename by adding .off to the end) for archival purposes. Now you will have a fresh start with CDDB. Be sure not to delete/move/rename the CD input plug-in (in_cdda.dll), if you can't see extensions...
Configuring Windows To Show Extensions
Also, try the same with the Windows local CDDB file (CDplayer.ini) usually located in the Windows folder. However, instead of just deleting the file this time I would strongly suggest to back it up incase you need it again.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

The following files are concerned with CDDB, check they are in the folder JM gave above.

in_cdda.dll
in_cdda.cdb
CDDBControlWinamp.dll
CDDBUIWinamp.dll

There is a slim chance it may be the two instances, the CDDB GUI changed a while back and they may be fighting over the registry entry or something. If you are happy working with the registry you could try deleting this key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cddb\Control
then run v5.093 to re-initialize the entry.

If you want to try uninstalling the old version then see here
for details of how to back up, should you want to reinstall again later.

I hope I'm not buging you with this...You guys are really fast with feedbacks...

Anyway, I've removed an older version and installed new version once again. However, the problem is still there.

I was wondering if you could help me with this registry file.
Where can i find it ( where is that file usually placed in windows ? )

Thanks

No disrespect, but if you need to ask about the registry then I'd rather you stayed well away from it, you can do an awful lot of damage.

If you have just the one instance now, you can achieve the same thing by doing a complete clean uninstall/reinstall following the instructions referenced in the link in my last post. Recheck your settings and remember to test via the <Alt+3> [CDDB] button.

I did clean uninstall/reinstall but things are still the same...
I've changed connection type for a short period ( from dial-up to ADSL ) and "unknown artist - track_x" have turned to "F,track number" !?

It seems like winamp just cannot conect to the internet though I've established connection. I can see that even from media library window where it says: "please connect to the internet to use this feature"

Any suggestions ?

I'm running out of ideas

Could you copy and paste the following link in Winamp Menu > Play > URL

http://212.72.165.18:9010

It's a radio station, see if that connects.

Anyone else ??

Radio works just fine.

But CDDB does not.

I'm going to bed now hoping we'll be better luck tomorrow.

UJ, you might want to consider making a .reg file to delete the registry key you're talking about.

Thanks guys, not sure I'd have known how to do that with any confidence.

I was thinking it wouldn't matter after a clean uninstall/reinstall, but it looks as if the reg entry survives that so maybe it's still worth trying.

@carcrashset - Download the file and unzip, double click 'deletecddbkey.reg'
Can you also supply system specs, you'll find details in the section marked Important at the bottom of the uninstall/reinstall post linked to above.

Now that I've read the rest of the thread. . .

Can you confirm that these discs are in the CDDB database and that this is an original CD and not a burned one? You can go to http://www.gracenote.com/music/ to check.

[musing]I wonder if it's significgant that the radio station he tested worked when specifying an IP.[/musing]

Hi guys

I unzipped the file, restarted my computer, but still nothing...
CDDB just doesn't seem to be working...I'll try this version on my laptop since this computer's configuration is very poor ( 433Mhz, 64MB RAM, win98, 56k US Robotics... ) and see if the problem persists there.

However, it seems that everything else works just fine exept this CDDB engine that has given me headaches

I've also tried to get informations with original as well as burned CD's.

Bye,

Miki

Self-burned CDs aren't stored in the online cddb, only commercial CDs are.

So, let's see...

Checklist:

You've uninstalled all versions of Winamp, and you've done a clean install of Winamp 5.093 Full

The correct Connection Type (Dial-Up modem) is selected in Winamp Prefs

Your ISP doesn't use a proxy connection

"Use CDDB" is checkmarked in the CD Plugin config (Prefs > Plugins > Input...)

in_cdda.dll, in_cdda.cdb, CDDBControlWinamp.dll, CDDBUIWinamp.dll are all present in the Winamp\Plugins folder

Nothing else is using the internet connection at the time (ie. all bandwidth is available).

Your firewall is configured to allow full internet access to Winamp.exe

Port 8880 is not blocked

You can connect ok to Shoutcast Radio and other streams listed under the Online Media section of the Media Library

Your Windows OS (and Service Pack, if relevant) is ?

Winamp is installed in what folder? (eg. C:\Program Files\Winamp)

You installed Winamp on an admin user profile, not a limited user profile, and you're currently logged on as said admin

The Winamp folder and no files within have the read-only attribute

You've read this and you're about to attach a HJT log to your next reply.

Yes, I've checked everything but it's still not working.
EAC seems to be working fine but EAC is using "freeddb" so I presume that everything's OK with my connections.

Maybe it's something with those files regarding CDDB...
Is it possible to copy only those (4) files in my winamp/plugins directory because when i click properties on one of those files it seems that they were created earlier...

Could you send me those files if possible ?

gracenote cddb is not freedb.

those files come with the winamp full installer. without those you can't play cd's at all.. tell us if you DON"T have any of those.

we can't help you if you don't tell us what information we ask for.

some other programs on your computer, that use CDDB may be causing the problem. do you have any other programs that use CDDB? this caused a simalar problem with me once. i suggest you uninstall the programs you don't use using Add/Remove from the control panel and with the ones that you do use try to dissable them from looking up the information, only have winamp running when testing it.

OK.

Everything is set exactly as Dj Egg wrote in checklist below.
And I understand that freedb is not cddb - i just wanted to make it clear that other programs, firewall and my internet connection works just fine.

- OS: Win 98 SE
- Winamp is installed in C:\Program Files\Winamp
- there aren't any admin restrictions on this computer
- I checked those cddb files - they are all there !

I asked: "Your ISP doesn't use a proxy connection"
You didn't respond.

However...

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.srce.hr:8001

Have you made sure this proxy is also being used by Winamp?

Winamp > Prefs > General Preferences:
Specify http proxy address:
proxy.srce.hr:8001

You can fix this entry with HJT.
Make sure all IE browser windows are closed first.
Checkmark this entry and click "Fix checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63467FD5-A8A8-22D8-978E-005022E14DE5} - (no file)

Apart from that, what are these exactly?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tcomantidialerrun] C:\Program Files\T-Com Antidialer\T-Com Antidialer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Brojac Impulsa] C:\PROGRAM FILES\BROJAC IMPULSA\BROJAC3.EXE

Re: cddb files

CDDBControlWinamp.dll = 252kb | v2.0.1.17
CDDBUIWinamp.dll = 276kb | v2.0.1.17

In MS IE the proxy server is enterd in the field, but I'm not using it ( the box "use a proxy server" is unchecked ). Beside that, I'm using Opera as web browser.

Since I obviously can't use CDDB engine, is there any other possibility ( some kind of a plugin... ) ?

CDDB is not even trying to connect cuz I don't see any internet activity when i press CDDB button.

T-com antidialer is an antidialer program.
Brojac impulsa is a program that keeps information about internet connection - upload/download, expenses, etc.

They shouldn't have any influence on winamp or at least they didn't with the previous versions.
