When I close Winamp, I get a message that says the program has caused an error and will be shut down. Under ``Details,'' it says WINAMP caused an invalid page fault in
module WSOCK32.DLL at 014f:00fa3132. I then click ``OK'' and Winamp closes, seemingly without any further problems. What's up with that, eh?

I have a Pentium 200, running Win95. No plugins are loaded. I don't get the error message the first time or two I run it but then it starts happening. I tried reinstalling, but that doesn't work.

Thanks for any help.

Try getting the Winsock2 update for Win95 from microsoft.com

Until then, goto Winamp Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Setup
Remove checkmarks next to: "check for new versions..." & "allow winamp to report..."
It might also be advisable to select "No internet connection available"
Or, if you use a proxy server, make sure the correct data is typed in.

Other possible causes / solutions:
Don't use the minibrowser
Disable use of CDDB (Prefs -> Input -> CDPlugin -> Configure)

Error on exit-Wsock32

I have the same problem in Windows 98 SE, 600 Mhz, 128MB RAM, and all Winamp internet functions were already disabled. Any further suggestions?

Win 95 only:
Winsock2 update for Win95
MS DUN 1.3 & Winsock2 Year 2000 update for Win95

For Win98 SE related issues, try these:
Win98 SE Top Issues & FAQs
Win98 Support
Win98 Support Search facility
Win98 Critical Updates
Contact Win98 Support

(Universal) Windows update home:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you haven't installed & aren't using any 3rd party non Nullsoft plugins, then I honestly can't think of anything else that may be causing this problem.
The only other suggestion is to goto the Winamp dir & delete the winamp.ini file.
This will restore all the default values next time you open Winamp.
NB: make sure Winamp is fully closed b4 deleting winamp.ini
A new ini file will be created when you re-open Winamp.
Apart from this, try uninstalling & reinstalling Winamp 2.71
(remove any surplus files left behind in Winamp dir b4 re-installing)

Good luck!

Fixed, at least for now

I downloaded the new winsock application and the corresponding Y2K patch for it and installed them, but that didn't solve the problem. That's OK, I needed them, anyway. I then deleted the .ini file, and that worked the first time I called Winamp, but not the second. Then ... I noticed that I didn't get the error message when I ran Winamp from Windows Explorer (the file manager, not Internet Explorer), so I figured the problem must be in the desktop shortcut.

I right-clicked on the shortcut, clicked on ``Properties'' and then ``Shortcut'' and typed "C:\Program Files\Winamp" where it says ``Start In.'' I haven't had the error message since.

Now, let's see what happens when I get some plug-ins.

Thanks for your help.

Most strange!
I'm glad that it worked for ya anyway . . .

The weird thing is that I myself am running Win95 (OSR2) and my desktop shortcut doesn't have anything typed in the "Start in" section, but I never get any error messages when exiting Winamp. Worth a mention I suppose, but if it worked for you, then so be it, maybe it'll work for others?

btw, not all of the plugins are dodgy, most of them are perfectly ok.
If you're going to install any, the best thing to do would be to check these forums first.
Use the search facility to see if any major problems have arisen with that particular plugin.
We did start a list a while back in the plugins forum, but lord knows what happened to it?
Sometimes, some people have no problems with a certain plugin, whereas others suffer a world of pain. It all depends on system compatibility I suppose. Most plugin developers obviously don't get the chance to test their plugins using different combinations of CPU, OS, Soundcard, Videocard, etc.
Oh yeah, and the wisest thing to do is to click on the link to the plugin author's homepage to see if there's any new updated version available. In some cases, the author doesn't submit an update, or it takes a few weeks for the plugins section to get updated, so the out-of-date version remains available. One example is the CDReader input plugin which has been updated 3 times on the author's home page, but not on the winamp.com site. We've lost count as to how many times we've had to tell people to go get the latest version from the author's site. Hey, but that's another story!

Anyway, any further problems, don't hesitate to get in touch.

RattleMan -

You should probably start a new topic, and when you do, try to include a description of the error messages you enounter. In addition, doing a search on Google and typing in the error message as the keywords will often get you quite a few helpful articles for runtime errors, kernel errors, etc.

If it seems to be a Winamp-related error, try to include what events preceded the error, as well as provide as much system information as possible.

Crash and learn

Tried fixing the shortcut as above, and voila--that stops the error when I launch Winamp by shortcut. But it still crashes on exit when it starts by autorun on a CD. The mystery continues....

It's an even bigger mystery to us if you don't provide us with any details of the actual crash.
