how do i enable this

If you have 5.1 speaker setups go to Multiple Speaker Output.

If not, take a look at this list of surround sound plugins from winamp.com | plugins.

how do i install the plugin. this is all strange to me because i have always had surroundsound and now its gone. i have a 4.1

Use the instructions for multiple speaker output. I mis-spoke in saying 5.1 (only): 4.1, as well as other set-ups can be used in conjunction with those instructions.

If it doesn't help, unzip any one of those plugins you find into the winamp\plugins directory.
