Winamp Internet radio
I apologize if this has been asked before, or if it is posted in the wrong place...so much to wade through! But here's my dilemma...I bought the pro version of Winamp, because I want to listen to a friend's radio show and record (I have permission) his appearance. However, I can't figure out 2 things - how do I connect to the radio station that I want (they do streaming audio), and 2, how do I record it? Step by step, as I am new at this! I have left and right clicked everything and can't figure out how to work it, and I need to know before 9 am Monday! Thanks.

If you know the link for your friend's station, you can open Winamp and in the playlist editor, click the Add button > URL.
Paste the URL into the box and click Open. You can also get to this box by Control + L in the Playlist Editor or Control + Click on the Main Window Eject button. As for recording the stream, you can't, regardless of which version of Winamp you have. It's illegal, and we can't help regardless, because you agreed to this by signing up for the forums. Per the Forum Rules: StreamRippers - Due to legal liability issues, any information or references to information about streamripping applications are strictly prohibited within these forums. Any threads/posts containing such information will be edited/deleted without warning.. Sorry ![]() jmat |

Thanks for your quick reply! Okay, no problem about the recording thing...I would at least like to listen to his appearance. I clicked on the ADD URL, but it wants to save it as .mp3. So I did that to see what would happen, and it couldn't connect. The radio station that I want to listen to is wbt.com. Thanks for any ideas, etc.

We need the link to the stream, any stream, from http://www.wbt.com. From some short tests, unless you can manage to get the stream link from behind the site's web interface for Online Radio, you can't use Winamp for playing it. Can your friend provide a link? (usually is m3u, pls, ram, rm, asx, etc)

When I went to the WBT site, I clicked on "listen now," or whatever it said, and a player came up. So I can listen to the show that way. But I had hoped to be able to use Winamp to listen to stuff, esp. since I paid for the pro version. If I have to know every detail about every radio station, that tells me that I probably won't like Winamp. I had bought it because I read that Winamp has a Streamripper plug in, which I cannot find on the site. Every radio station URL that I try to save has the .mp3 added to teh end, and nothing works. I'm going back and forth between 2 discussion boards and the Winamp help and still can't get it. I think I'm just gonna get a refund, if possible. It's just too hard for me. But I thank you for your time and help...it is much appreciated.

It's not a problem...
Winamp does not and probably never will have a StreamRipper built in, due to legal issues. So whatever you read was a crock of shit. If it was somewhere on http://www.winamp.com that you read this, you misunderstood :p. Out of curiosity, what are you inputting into the Open URL box? valid stream If you take a look at the end of the link, it has a filename (harveysat07092005) and an extension (wma) separated by a period (.). Most streams will have this similar format. Some may be IP addresses http://127.0.0.1:8000/playlist.pls; ok bad example as 127.0.0.1 is your computer's loopback address, but it will have the above format [http://server:port/filename.ext]) instead of domains. Very rarely will you get a valid result from something as simple as http://www.wbt.com. Refund link here Hope this helps. jmat |

Internet radio
Hi....sorry for the delay...but I had to take a break from this thing! The link you provided might work...I haven't tried it yet. The site where I want to hear my friend on the radio has a link to click, which launches my AOL media player. So I can listen to my friend that way. I didn't try to use the link that you gave me because if that's the only way to listen to various radio stations, then Winamp isn't for me. I can't spend days figuring out what to add as the URL for various radio stations. I wanted something simple...I had hoped that there would be a way to set Winamp as my default player, and that it would launch when trying to listen to various stations. I guess there isn't a way, but I do thank you for your help.

It's more than setting Winamp as the default player [reference], I'm afraid.
In cases like http://www.wbt.com, the website developers force users to use specific player controls (like Windows Media Player) through ActiveX. I know that some might disagree with me (on that particular case DJ Egg might ), but that's largely the matter at hand. You just have to know the stream url directly in order to bypass such mechanisms and to use Winamp instead. That's just the way of the world (or of the Internet) these days. Sorry. For future reference, if he had had the chance , DJ Egg might have told you that it is fairly simple to retrieve the stream url if you use View Page Info > Media tab, by right-clicking a streaming player control in Firefox. Such streams often have OBJECT tags attached to them.jmat |

Thanks, but I don't have Firefox. I was reading about some security holes that they have, too. At this point in my life (almost 50), I like simple. I'm not a techie kid who likes to mess with stuff. I just learned that my cell phone can send and receive emails and text messages! I have had such disasters with downloading things and having major problems that I just use whatever the computer came with, do the critical updates, run anti-spyware and anti-virus software, etc. I have learned a lot over the past 6 years, but as things become more complicated I just don't have the time to figure it out. I was quite happy with Windows 98SE and AOL 4.0, until a new computer became a necessity. So as you can see, Winamp isn't for me. But I am happy that it exists for those who want it and like it. And I thank you and DJEGG for your assistance. On some boards (not Winamp), I have had nasty comments in addition to whatever help was provided - thanks for keeping it civil!
