buying winamp pro

I am having no luck finding an answer to this question, so I hope I can get some help here.

If I buy winamp pro, do I have to buy it again when a new version is released? Just curious, thanks for any help you can give me.

I don't think you need to buy WInamp Pro. You can find a hmm... easily, and Justin intended people to get this hmm... when he added burining support (which is the only reason there is a "pro" version). Justin parted Nullsoft a while ago so this approach of getting the Pro version may now be illicit.

Why didn't Nullsoft add support for Nero's Burning Engine if you got Nero Burning Rom installed? I think the engine they licensed for use in Winamp (SONIC) is nice and it does the job well, but I don't see why people should stick with this if they enjoy Aheads products better. Ahead gives away the SDK for using an installed copy of Nero to burn for free. No license needed. This could help the situation if Winamp ever goes open-source as the code that interfaces with the current licensed burning library (SONIC) could be removed and people can use Aheads Nero API in their personal builds of Winamp if they want. I really want to see Winamp go open-source. That way we could fix the API and help aid the further development of video support.

how do you propose fixing the api without breaking every plugin in the world out there?

You have to understand that the developers have always been aware that things arent perfect, but sadly, lots of plugins expect this quirky behaviour, which is why things have remained the way they are for so long now.

Yeah, I've seen the plug-in module in Winamp described as an "ugly hack," and I imagine that's all it is. I also remember someone waxing philosophical about how Winamp3's component system was so much nicer in the same post, but we all know what happened with -that.- >_>

Ah well.

No plug-ins rely on a certain implementation of the CD Ripping and or CD Burning feature in Winamp.

I was not talking about fixing the API. I was talking about adding more API functionality (IPC messages), and fixing bugs with some of the API (not everything). Those plug-ins who relies on quirk in Winamp are buggy themselves so they would have to be updated anyway.

And YES! Winamp3's componenent architecture was far superior to Winamp2/5's simple architecture. Maybe it required more overhead, but it was at least VERY functional. You could manipulate almost everything in Winamp3 using a component and without rewriting the core itself. I have not seen anything better than Wasabi when it comes to extensibility.

It doesn't help that Nullsoft Dev team confuses us plug-in developers when they rewrite the core to support the Media Library plug-in and DrO's JTFE. If they were so kind to help out DrO (so he didn't have to use hacks) why not help out the other plug-in developers as well? I know DrO is part of Nullsoft in a way, but it's really unfair that only one guy is getting all glory from Nullsoft while leaving the other VERY GOOD programmers in the dark.
