Problem with Winamp 5.1

Hello all,

First off, thank you guys so much for Winamp.

I've been using Winamp for as long as I can remember and have never had a mahor issue with it until now. I recently upgraded from 5.09 to 5.1 and Winamp no longer works. Let me explain what I did and what happens:

I installed the upgrade over the old version at first. Installation finished smoothly. Ran Winamp. Played a song, and everything worked fine. Stopped Winamp (did not exit) and came back later on that day to listen to some more music. Played another song but ths song wouldnt play.

I thought this was a glitch so I shut it down, restarted winamp, same situation, song wont play.

Next step... uninstalled winamp and did a clean install, no third party plugins. Same situation. The more I tried to figure out the problem, this is what I realise is happening. Once windows starts up, and i start winamp, the first song will play fine. If I skip to another song by using the 'next' button on the player, the next song will also play fine. However, if I stop playing the first song and then try to play another one, or if the first song finishes and it tries to advance to the next one in the list, it wont play the next song. The weird thing is that when the song doesnt play, the track time stays at 00:00, but the icon to the left of the time shows play as highlighted, the play control is highlighted and there is no time slider.

Tried loading a song into windos media player, that wont play either (sound is locked up for the entire computer). When I log off or restart the computer, before windows shuts down, it ends a winamp.exe process. However, in my many attempts to get songs to play, I have restarted winamp many times but it doesnt work. It seems to me that when I shut down winamp, a process is still running that i have to end (doesnt shut down completely). However, once the process is ended during windows shutting down/logging off, sound then returns and i hear the windows shut down sound. When I log back in, same thing, winamp plays one song but nothing else.

Also of note is that I reverted back to winamp 5.09 bu doing a clean install again and it works fine.

Sorry for the long explanation of my problem but I hope you understand it at least. I searched for two days in the forums with no luck so hopefully you could guide me through this.

System specs: WINXP PRO SP2, Celeron 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, (not sure what sound card or motherboard off the top of my head, onboard audio card though, Realtek I think). I have attached a hijackthis log as well.

Thanks in advance

Try unchecking "allow hardware acceleration" in the DirectSound Output config
(Prefs > Plugins > Output > out.ds.dll > config).
It was enabled by default in 5.1 because it is required for multi-speaker output support. Maybe your sound chip doesn't support it too well? Either that or you need to update the mobo chipset and onboard sound drivers.
