.WMV files will not play! Worked before! Full analysis of problem inside.

Hello,

This is my first time posting on the Winamp technical support forums. I sincerely hope that I will never again have to post here (In a positive way, meaning not ever having problems again ). Basically, my problem is that I cannot play any .WMV files in this new Winamp; 5.1 Surround Sound Edition.

When I open a .WMV file, the Winamp window opens, but nothing else. It says playing file "Insert file name.wmv", but nothing will play. I can press the play/stop buttons, and can basically do anything, so it doesn't freeze up or crash.

I have virtually tried everything possible to fix this. I reinstalled Winamp at least 11 times trying to fix this. 5 of those times were Clean Installs. I have tried numerous plugins, from Power-something to FFD-something (excuse me for my lack of memory).

The wierdest part of this problem is that the .WMV files worked before I updated my Winamp to this new version. I have tried downloading older Winamp versions, but the .WMV files will not work on those either. However, they play perfectly on Windows Media Player. Also, I am 100% sure these files do not require any licenses.

As for my system specifications, here they are:
Windows XP Home Edition
Winamp 5.1 Surround Sound Edition
MSI K8T Neo2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon64 3500+
512x2 Dual Channel OCZ RAM
Built-in Sound card
Connect3d ATI Radeon X800 XT
DirectX 9.0c (Newest one)

Also, I reinstalled my DirectX to the newest one, and I also installed the newest codecs from Microsoft. I also have no plugins installed on this Winamp, it's a fresh, clean install.

I also ran Gspot, opened a .WMV file, tried to render it, but it failed. Lastly, I asked a friend to send his setup to Winamp 5.1 because mine might have been corrupt, but I still cannot play .WMV files. I also tried something with enabling/disabling the overlay functions in PReferences, but it still will not work.

Any help to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. Remember, the .WMV files worked before the new update, and still work on Windows Media Player.

P.S. I also checked that .WMV is enabled in the Preferences, along with every other file.

Please confirm the following:

1) You installed Winamp Full, not Lite

2) in_dshow.dll is present in the Winamp\Plugins folder and is recognized in Winamp @
Prefs > Plugins > Input > Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder

3) WMV is listed in the Extension List in the DirectShow Decoder config, eg.

MPG;MPEG;M2V;AVI;ASF;WMV

4) You've removed any unnecessary 3rd-party plugins you might've installed, eg. Powerplayer etc.

ps. If you require help on the irc channel, then it's wise to wait around for a bit longer than 5 minutes ;-)

Thank you for your reply, DJ Egg.

1) Yes, I have installed the full version. I made sure of that.

2) in_dshow.dll is present in my Winamp/Plugins folder. It is also recognized at Preferences > Plugins > Input > Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder

3) WMV is listed in the extension list.

4) Like I said before, I did a clean installation.

Also, I am in the IRC Channel I've been there for over 4 hours now, and still no one has posted anything at all, even though I outlined my problem.

However, I think I may know what is wrong, though I could be wrong. My in_dshow.dll file could be corrupt. Is that possible? Where could I download just that file?

Thanks again.

Pythos sent me a sample wmv and it plays fine on my winamp, same version of in_dshow, same codecs, same os, same directx version... believe me, we've covered virtually everything (including cleaning up the hjt log, reinstalling wmv 8/9 codecs & DX9.0c, clean install of Winamp, etc) over irc, plenty of which hasn't been discussed in this thread.

Hey Gameplaya15143,

Thanks for your replies. I downloaded that plugin you said, and tried playing .WMV files, but it still wouldn't work.

I also tried the google approach to the in_dshow.dll, and I downloaded that file from dlldump or something like that, but it was only 64kb compared to the 120kb one in Winamp. However, I still tried it, but it didn't work.

I'm guessing many of you haven't ever seen a problem like this before. I must admit, with all of DJ Egg's help, I'm surprised it is still not fixed.

I still welcome all help from the community.

Thanks again everyone for helping.

i have the solution

REFORMAT!!

it is obvious that your PC is messed up, might as well just start over... well, use that as a last resort.

since they do work on WMP, download graphedit
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/do...hedit_141.html

and open the wmv with that, you might have a filter that is conflicting with winamp's in_dshow plugin, use graphedit to find out exactly what filters are being used

what version of the windows media runtimes do you have? 8? 9? 9.1? (ive heard some not so good things about 9.1)

i dont think this can handle wmv, but maybe
http://inmplayer.sourceforge.net/

lastly, WMV sucks , convert them to a better format

edit: thought of something else. do other videos play ok in winamp? like avi? mpg?
