The current Winamp player (2.71)will not open when using IE 5.5. Instead all winamp programs are opened by the quicktime player (version 5). If I remove quicktime, IE will not open any player including winamp. Interestingly, winamp works fine using Netscape 4.6 whether the quicktime player is loaded or unloaded. Please help as this is becoming a major frustration.

I wouldn't exactly class this as a Winamp bug, but if ya want some tech support, here goes:
So what you're saying is that Quicktime is your default player for streaming files in IE5.5 . . . but you want Winamp to be the default (wise choice of course) . . . Okay: 1) Quicktime Control Panel -> Browser Plug-in (from drop down menu) 2) Click the "MIME Settings" button & remove the checkmarks (plus signs) of your choice. 3) Okay everything & exit QT Control Panel 4) Open Winamp : goto "Prefs -> FileTypes" & select your choice of associations. Voila! |

Thanks for your reply, DJEgg, I took your advice but I still cannot open any programs with winamp using the IE 5.5.
As stated I even removed quicktime but this did not correct the problem. I also reinstalled IE but this also failed to correct the problem. Any other suggestions to this vexing problems. Again I can use Netscape and winamp works fine!! |

Hmm, well that's the ONLY way to unassociate QT from streaming files.
You definitely removed all the + signs under "MIME settings"? Maybe also goto the "file associations" drop down menu & remove the checkmarks there too. btw, uninstalling QT is not recommended! You may experience problems whilst trying to open/play MOV MPG QT* PIC* and other common filetypes. Could you also tell me what it is exactly that you're trying to stream? These are files that are streamed over the internet, not Programs. Winamp & QT & IE5 are programs, radio streams & mp3's (etc) are file formats. However, if Winamp is the default player with Netscape then there's no reason why it shouldn't also be so with IE5.x I think that QT only effects the default browser, whereas Netscape has it's own config utility. IE5 uses the standard Windows associations, unless a particular website gives you other options of choosing between various players (WMP, QT, Real, Winamp, etc) I can't think of anything else right now. Let us know how ya get on. Anyone else got any suggestions? |
