Wondering if anyone else notices this. Under the new decoder (2.72b) while using Internet Explorer or scrolling down a web page, loading a web page, etc. Does anyone else notice that the track playing "statics" out for a split second (similar to the "win2k crackle/pop bug" only more of a static-like distortion)? It's kinda odd. (btw, thanks Justin for fixing that annoying lame bug ) but naturally I gotta be a trouble maker and find new things wrong

I noticed that too.. kinda minor static but it's there. IE is using 20 megs of RAM but I have 256 megs so..

heh?

yeah its not a big deal but it is there and its pretty noticable (to me at least). Might be another win2k only thing. Hmph. Just wanted to bring it to someone's (hopefully Justin's duh ) attention. 192MB here and IE is sucking down about 10MB which is a few megs higher then usual.

I'm not 100% sure that the issue you are talking about is what i've experienced in the past, but i've had something similiar.

While using IE ( primarily if i'm using the mousewheel to scroll ), I get a short distortion / static. However, I moved Winamp to "high" processor priority, and it has resolved the problem.

Since Winamp really doesn't use much processor time anyway, it really hasn't caused any problems either.

hmm yeah mine was already at high so I turned it down to normal and they became a bit more frequent... I've also noticed the static/blip when minimizing windows that are sucking down significant memory (AIM windows with lots of images exchanged..yadda). I dont dare put it up to realtime as this has caused problems under windows2000 (it doesn't like realtime priority on programs that it doesn't deem worthy )

oh sidenote: I'm not sure what issue you've also been having in the past but this one has only surfaced since I started using this decoder so if "the past" is longer ago... then who knows

fear the madness

Does it happen with all songs? You should try others first. Do you have a PCI Display Adapter. In this case you should read this, http://www.zefiro.com/vgakills.txt

I have similar problems. But also when I press on a menu or start button the sound goes a bit strange. Also there are occassional short skips in the song. This happened with the other decoder though and I have the same problem with sound in games.

Driver trouble is the problem not Winamp. Maybe Win 2000 fault as 98 and ME work fine with sound.

Does anyone else have Win2000 sound probs with a AGP card? Cause I do.

Hmm, I just had that problem scrolling down this page, although I hadn't noticed it before. I have a pIII 450 with 192 mb of ram and win2k.

smooth scrolling and all other transistion effects are off.. been there tried that. The pop/blips have been around forever since I've gone to win2k so they are most likely win2ks fault. I dont have any problems with sound outside of this one or any resulting from my agp video. And it happens on pretty much any song, bitrate, encoder, etc. on a P2 450/192MB/win2k sp1

I'm having the same problem!

I'm glad I found this discussion because it's the reason I was browsing these forums. I'm running win2k with 128 megs ram on a pIII 866. Winamp has started to make some funny "staticy" (for lack of a better description) noises. They're very win 2k specific as I have never heard them in win98. Actually it's not really noises at all, but it sounds like it's cutting out... if I run something else or minimize or maximize a window it'll do it and sometimes stop completely and I'll have to end the winamp task.

What's going on???

It didn't do this in Win98.

What kind of graphics cards are you guys using?? I have a Creative Labs 3D Banshee that I think may be the culprit for many of my problems. I'm going to upgrade my memory and video card in the next couple of days so if it fixes the problem I'll let you guys know.

Thanks.

Graham

P.S. Let me know if you figure it out!!

I'm experiencing skips in Winamp playback recently. Didn't happen before. It happens one or two times a song. I don't have any plugins or anything installed.

I guess it might be some application I have installed recently.

To the Win2K Users..

It's my understanding it takes a minimum of 256k Ram, to run Win2K efficiently.

2.72 isn't out yet. It's the in_mp3.dll file that had been updated. Get it here -
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=38757

and Win 2000 will run on 128MB and happily on 196MB.

well all that pointless jabber aside, yes it seems that this problem is Win2k specific. I'm still playing around with it but I'm still unsure what the specific cause is.

And just for the record, I've run win2k on 32MB... you can go make dinner while it boots but the guy never turns the machine off (and only uses it for word processing lol) It sucked bad you should really have 128, or 192 for even smoother sailing.

Update: does this static-ing get any worse for anyone when you crank the priority up to real-time? I think if you give non-essential (uhh I need winamp to live, windows, who are you kidding? ) applications real-time priority it gets angry. Bah.

A) I'd like to see that
B) Didnt Gates say "256k is enough for everyone"?
C) I know it was a typo but I had to make a deal of it hehe
