About FIOS

I'm in Hillsboro, Oregon (please save me).

Verizon installed FIOS here as a test market. Consumer bandwidths are available to 5/30 m for $150 a month. The 2/15m connection is $40. That's what I bought.

You are looking at the future with this. If you are in a semi urban area, I would expect to see the guys from Orius chewiing up your street to put this in.

This fiber optic system is capable for handling all your communications needs with one laser lead.

The reason I know you'll have this pretty soon is that it's cheap. Unlike wireline, fiber optic is almost indestructible and requires little or no maintenance. Even though these systems are expensive to put in, the reduced maintenance will pay for it rather quickly.

2mbps.... that beats 384k. It's not only faster, it makes a lot of things more practical. For example. I can upload a whole DVD of data, without completely choking my connection in about 8 hours. It took 80+ before and was almost certain to crash.

We americans are getting behind, I was reading that they have 30m symmetric FIOS in Finland.

So, this is cool. Sometimes it doesn't speed things up, because some parts of the web are slow, but for the most part, this is great. It's sort of like having the internet on a lan.

I smile a little bit, when I remember a few years back when I couldn't get DSL.

This is about like switching from a modem to DSL.

Even if you don't get lightwire soon, it's gonna put hella pressure on your ISP to do better. Even DSL and cable could do better than they do. They kinda meter the bandwidth out with a thimble, especially in the uplink direction.

No matter what, I think you are gonna be a lot happier with your internet connection by next year.

The games afoot

Edit: Gamers how about 60 ms ping rates. Don't play Halo against me

Does fiber optic slow much with high traffic? (like cable does)

You mean high upload traffic?

I mean, when I'm on my cable connection at home, it (up and down) slows to a crawl (ok, it's still faster than dial-up) during peak hours.

Ah. I have nothing to add to that, then.

Wikipedia wrote:
Users in a neighborhood share the available bandwidth provided by a single coaxial cable line. Therefore, connection speed can vary depending on how many people are using the service at the same time.

Often the idea of a shared line is seen as a weak point of cable Internet access. From a technical point of view, all networks, including DSL services, are sharing a fixed amount of bandwidth between a multitude of users — but because cable networks tend to be spread over larger areas than DSL services, more care must be taken to ensure good network performance.

You've always been behind on the speed factor.
Canada has had 5mbps for a long time now at comparable prices to American broadband.

I've had 5 Mbit/s for, shit, I don't know how long ... maybe 7 years? America's problem is that it's too spread out compared to other countries. We've got too much damn land.

Saying that, I'd rather have the BBC and my 1meg connection, that 20meg downstream and Fox News.

Incompetancy. That's the only possible explaination.

Saying that, my 1meg package is upgradable to 10meg for about $55-60 (£38 I believe).

Bastard. But is that 10Mbit up, too?
