Winamp has moved my files onto the c drive from my "music' drive. On top of that most of the files will not play from the windows media player. I get an error message.

Winamp is not responsible for your problem, ie. it does NOT move/rename/modify any files whatsoever. Windows Media Player, iTunes, and MusicMatch (and maybe some other players) all have optional features to reorganize your music files, but not the default installation of Winamp (I can't vouch for any extra 3rd-party plugins you may have installed though).
Alas, we're going to need more information if someone is going to be able to help you.... eg. HijackThis log, Windows OS, file formats/extensions of your music files (eg. mp3, wma, ogg, wav, m4a, aac, etc), a zipped download link to one of the problem files, whether any of the other aforementioned players are installed -and if so- their version numbers, etc etc. |

All I can think of at the moment is this...
WMP9+ silently modifies id3 tags in the background http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=155774 http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=149185 http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=136057 http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=125047 http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....635#post943616 http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....751#post900261 Windows Media Player -> Tools - > Options: Library tab: Uncheck: Rename music files using rip music settings Uncheck: Rearrange music in rip music folder Privacy tab: Uncheck: "Update my music files by retreiving missing media information from the Internet" Though I must reiterate that there is no such feature/setting in Winamp. If those options are enabled in Windows Media Player, then Windows Media Player will silently modify/rearrange your files whenever you access them, and it doesn't even need to be open to do so.... ie. it's even possible that the evil WMP rearranged your files in the background when you accessed your files with Winamp, heh. Other than that, we'd still need the pre-requested information, and a hjt log to see if there's any malware running on your system. |
