Ripping to MP3's...
This may seem like a really silly question, and I have looked everywhere I can think of, but HOW do I convert tracks to MP3s???
I have the latest version of Winamp Pro (5), and in the preferences under 'CD Ripping' it gives me the option to select the format I wish to encode to, and I can select MP3... but can I find WHERE I actually go to do this? No! Please someone help me I feel like I'm going crazy and given that as far as I can see no one else has asked this question, maybe I am, but either way it'd be nice to know! I am using the _Scythe skin. I don't suppose you really need my spec's for this but just in case, I'm using Windows XP SP2, erm... not sure what else you'd need to know - I have enough memory and hard disk space etc but that's not really relevant. I just want to convert my tracks to MP3s!!! Please help.... Jess ! |

Ripping means extracting the audio data from an Audio CD and encoding them into music files (eg. wav, mp3, aac, etc) that you can store on your hard drive.
Converting already existing music files (wav, flac, aac, etc) on your hard drive into another format (in your case, mp3) is known as transcoding. Which of the two is it that you want to do? The ui for CD Ripping can be found via: Winamp > Media Library > Devices > CD Drive (left pane) > Rip button (right pane). Further info can be found via the online help file: http://www.winamp.com/support/help/50/Winamp5.htm For transcoding from one already-exisiting file format into another you need to either use the Transcoder plugin or an MP3 Output plugin. |

Ahh thank you, it's transcoding I want to do - I didn't realise they were different things.
I already tried downloading the transcoder plugin but it didn't work when I then tried using the transcode option in winamp, so I'll give the mp3 output plugin a try. Thanks! |

What file format are you converting from?
There's a know problem with WAV to MP3 with the Transcoder, because the Transcoder cirrently doesn't support %filename% for the output (ie. it's looking for artist/title metadata to form the output filename, which .wav doesn't support). There's also known problems with some other formats, in particular WMA (maybe just drm-protected wma, not sure). But other than that, for other formats (ogg, flac, mpc, etc) all you need is the correct input plugin (decoder) to be installed, and the transcoder should work for x-to-mp3. |
