Can't play mp3s from CD drive on new IBM thinkpad
Hi folks,
I spent a bit of time searching the forum for a solution here, so I hope this isn't a common question. I am trying to play some MP3 files on a CD in my IBM thinkpad R52, running Windows XP Professional SP2, which has a built-in CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-Burner drive. I find that I can add the files to the playlist, and begin playback with no problems. However, after playing for a minute or two, playback hangs (Maybe the DVD drive has to spin up or something?) and Winamp either crashes completely, or I get one second of music every minute or so after that. I have tried copying the files to the hard drive and playing, and this works perfectly, so I assume it is something to do with my drive. I've also tried the play method and tweaking the DirectSound settings as suggested in some posts, with no positive effects. Can anybody help out? Is there a "power down" feature for the CD drive? If so, have you tried disabling it?
Try disabling the Sonic engine...

Winamp > Ctrl+P
Plug-ins > Input
double click 'Nullsoft CD LineIn plug-in'
uncheck "Use Sonic engine when possible" and keep "Enable digital audio extraction when possible" checked
close out of Prefs > close & restart Winamp
Note: If Using WinXP or Win2000 and DAE does not work, try adding the ASPI layer (wnaspi32.dll) to your hard drive as shown in the following post by DJ Egg... http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....65#post1223065 If this only seems to happen with MP3, data or enhanced CDs try the menu play method... In Winamp click on the main menu icon > select 'Play' > select 'Audio CD x:' where "x" is the drive of choiceAlso try playing from the Devices section of the ML |

Power down feature?
Hi JonnyMac,
Thanks for the tips. I've checked my settings and the Sonic engine is disabled. I have also tried the menu play method with no improvement. I think it is down to the drive, and the idea that it is powering down and then taking ages to spin up has merit, I'm thinking - especially since a program installation crashed out under similar circumstances today. However, I've searched around the various properties of the drive in the device manager in windows, and I couldn't find one that said in layman's terms anything about powering down. Any ideas where I might find this? (Running Windows XP) Looking at the drive properties in device manager, there were a couple of variables on the Details tab of the properties box that looked like they meant something, but I could only read them and they didn't mean anything to me. If it means anything to any techo folks here, the Current Power State was 'D0', and the Power Capabilities were 'PDCAP_DO_Supported' and 'PDCAP_D3_Supported' |

MP3 CDs
Hi,
This is a question, not an answer . . . Is Winamp Pro 5.1 supposed to have the ability to directly play a CD with MP3 tracks on it? I tried it and couldn't. It only recognized the CD as having a single track (it actually has 36). It did play the first track and then stopped. I can't find anything in the documentation that specifically says it will play MP3 CDs, only that it will play "MP3 files" and "audio cds." Comments from those in the know would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Mp3 CDs contain Mp3 files, they are no different from Mp3 files stored on your Hard Drive.
Access them as you would any other files. i.e. via 'Open file(s)' rather than via the Media Library Devices or Menu > Play > Audio CD. UJ |

Thanks UJ. I see I need to use the "Play Folder" option to get the tracks to play in succession.
I appreciate the assistance. |
