doesn't play any video files

Hi all,
I have been always using Winamp for watching my video files (mpeg, avi etc). Recently I've bought a laptop and I am surprised that none of the video files are playing on Winamp anymore, although they have no problem on Windows Media Player. There is no problem with the audio files though.
I thought that getting the latest version would solve my problem, but nothing changed with 5.12. The video file's name is displayed above the progress bar, but is always followed by (-16:-40), for example
BOAT.MPEG (-16:-40).
The duration is not displayed next to the title in the index table, there is no sound (as happens when a codec is required), there is no movement in the progress bar, the video file types are all clicked and I am so frustrated about this bcs I love using Winamp for my videos and I cannot stand Windows Media Player.
Pls help if any of this sounds familiar.

check and make sure that mpg, avi, etc. are part of the extention list on in_dshow

it sounds to me like in_mp3 is trying to decode them

open winamp's preferences (ctrl + P)
click, input, double click the directshow decoder

(if you didn't install the full version of winamp, you might not have the dshow decoder)

I was able to watch WMV files fine in WinAmp and then made some changes to my computer and one new problem is that I couldn't see anything when I tried to play these files. I made the changes you suggested by adding WMV to the list in the Direct Show decoder. Now the player opens with a black screen and the Nullsoft logo, but no picture. How can I get these to play? Also, I just uninstalled and reinstalled WinAmp.
