MCI Error
I have been unsuccessfully trying to configure WinAmp 5.11 pro to play RM files. I uninstalled my RealOne Player and installed Real Alternative.
I installed the Tara plug in in WinAmp. I added RA and RM to the list for Direct Show file types. When I try to play an RM file I get this message MCI Error: Incompatible Media I have been struggling with this for a week and have also tried some other music programs but still no luck. Anyone have suggestions for me that aren't over my head? I'm not an expert in things audio. Are there direct show codecs to be installed? Also I saw some mention of removing the RA and RM file types from Tara but couldn't find where to do that. thanks pat |

Tara and Real Alt. are not well suited to using DirectShow, some types work fine, others not.
First clear up DirectShow : Winamp Prefs > Input plugins > DirectShow > Config > click 'Set to Default' button to clear Real extentions. Then set up Tara to use the Real playback engine : Prefs > Input plugins > Tara > Config > Untick 'Process audio through Winamp' If necessary, open 'tara.ini'(Winamp main folder) in Notepad and make sure that the extentions you require are shown in the line 1=RAM;RMM; ... [Edit] Bleh, too late. Hi UJ [/Edit]
Firstly, unless you really badly want to get rid of Real Player, then there's no need to uninstall it, and therefore no need to install Real Alternative. With RealPlayer installed, all you then need to do is to install the Tara plugin. If you decide to uninstall RealPlayer and then install RealAlt, you still should only need to install the Tara plugin for Winamp to be able to play all Real formats. The DirectShow method referenced in the sticky thread is another workaround, which apparently lets you play some RA/RM files without the need to install the Tara plugin. However, I could never get the DirectShow method to work (maybe it does for some files, but none that I tried). Note, if it even works at all, the DirectShow method only works with RealAlt installed. Basically, remove RA and RM from the in_dshow extension list and just use the Tara plugin. The config/file association settings for Tara are stored in the Tara.ini file in the Winamp root folder, and should look something like: [File Types] ; Real Audio and Video Files 1=RAM;RMM;RA;RNX;RMX;RV;RM;RMJ;RPM;RT;SMI;SMIL:Real Audio Files Also note that when using Tara, you'll probably need to uncheck "process audio through winamp" in the Tara plugin config (winamp > prefs > plugins > input > tara > config). |

MCI Error
Thanks for both responses. This sounds quite straightforward so I don't know why I'm having so much difficulty.
I uninstalled Real Alternative and reinstalled Real Player. It plays music fine and everything looks good. I have the Tara plugin installed and it has the RA, RM, RAM file types authorized. I removed RA and RM from Direct Show. I still get the error MCI Error: Invalid Media Type Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks Pat |
