ripping then losing all my songs
I have a gateway laptop with winamp 5.
I have a stack of eight CD's from various artists. I don't have access to the internet now, so I ripped each CD and they showed up in my media library as unknown. so then after each one I searched for "unknown" in my media library, found the new tracks, and labeled them all one by one. this process took about 3 hours because I am a rotten typist. the next day I started my computer and all my nice label songs are gone. The only ones still there is the last CD i ripped and couple songs from each other CD, almost like winamp replaced the files I just ripped with whatever CD I ripped most recently, over and over. the ripping directory on my computer says the folder, but there are only about 25 songs in there, not nearly all of them. Where are the 100+ songs I ripped? Am I going to have to label them all again? What can I do to make sure this won't happen again? Thank you for any help. i quit using itunes because of this same problem, and because winamp looks better. |

You have to label then BEFORE you rip them.
If you can't use cddb (which will automatically label/tag the cd's for you) then after you've inserted the cd, right click in the tracks pane (media library > devices > cd drive > right pane) and select "Edit CD Info" You then need to manually type in at least the Artist and Album title, and optionally the individual track titles... otherwise, if the artist & album & tracks remain as unknown, you'll end up with all your files being stored in a folder called "Artist Unknown - Album Unknown" with filenames of: "01 - Artist Unknown - Track1.mp3" "02 - Artist Unknown - Track2.mp3" "03 - Artist Unknown - Track3.mp3" etc etc, and these will just get overwritten each time you rip another cd (unless you correctly edit the CD Info prior to ripping). |
