First Punk Rock Band!?
Although it might not be really important for my favourite's band glory and honour, i begin to question if the Ramones were the first Punk Rock band.
I know bands like the Stooges and New York Dolls had some of punk's aestethics and lyrical themes and Iggy Pop is known as "Godfather of Punk". There was also a Rock group called "Ton Steine Scherben" in Germany in the late sixties who directed their lyrics very directly against authorities and conventions and forestalled much of especially german punk lyrics. However, these acts didn't play the Ramone's untamed, fast raw rock n roll 2-minute song-sound which revolutioned the view of Music and made Malcom McLaren found the Sex Pistols to radicalize and spread the movement around the world. But now I heard that The Dictators, who I also really like, founded little before Joey and co. And I must admit they sound quite like Punkrock. However, just give me your opinion (or historic facts)! |
