Squeal In mp3 file

This one's got me stumped.. I've NEVER experienced this in 5+ years of heavily using Winamp.

I started listening to an mp3 file, and heard a high pitched squeal in the background... it's a cross between a whistle and maybe fingernails on a blackboard... might also be the air escaping from a punctured tire, or the interference you get listening to AM at night.

Anyway, I decide to open it up in Cool Edit (Adobe Audition) and see if I can isolate and filter it. Lo and behold, when I play it in Cool Edit, the whistle is GONE.

Winamp whines 100% of the way through the file, Cool Edit doesn't even whimper.

What could possibly be going on?

Based on a frequency scan in Cool Edit, it appears the squeal is at about 4800 - 4900 Hz.

I've uploaded a 60 second demo with 30 seconds of the whine followed by 30 seconds clean... can anybody help me figure this one out?

THANKS!

The high-pitched background squeal is there when I play the file in all of Windows Media Player, VLC, Media Player Classic, IrfanView, Winamp. So it's nothing to do with Winamp, but just the way the mp3 was encoded. Maybe you can use CoolEdit or similar utility to remove the artefact?

I don't think I explained myself well. The file I linked to is a RECORDING of Winamp playing the offending file and squealing for 30 seconds, followed by a RECORDING of the same file being played in Cool Edit and NOT squealing.

The file SHOULD squeal for 30 seconds in ANY player... the squeal is on the recording. The next 30 seconds should NOT squeal any anybody's player.

I'm wanting to know why the ORIGINAL file would squeal in Winamp but not in Cool Edit.

It's pretty big, but if I need to link to the original file, I can do that.

Ahhh, doh! :-o

Yeah, a link to the original file would be good.
(probably best to zip it up first, heh)

I'm not sure what else to suggest, especially if this is the one and only file that you experience the problem with.
