Two suggestions for the next update of Winamp

First and foremost:

The volume control in Winamp turns down the volume of my entire computer. This is annoying, as I sometimes like to work on things (games, too) that have sound, but I like the music to be quieter than my work. This glitch makes it impossible to do so. Windows Media Player has no problem with this. Neither does Real Player. Neither does Quicktime.

Second, and least important:

When I upgraded from four to five, I noticed that Winamp lost a feature very dear to me. The split playlist editor window was used often and with earnest by me. I like having my list of playlists on one half, and the contents of that playlist on the other. Why did this feature get removed?

Both of these problems occured between versions four and five.

Preferences > Plugins > Output. Select DirectSound.

There was no Winamp 4.X.
Winamp3 1.0 had the playlist sidecar, Winamp 5.X (which is based on Winamp 2.X) stores multiple playlists in the Media Library.

Sorry, I meant v3. The previous version. I've been short on sleep and assumed previous = -1 (therefore making 5-1=4).

<EDIT>

Wait, so how does this whole Winamp3 v1.0 work? wouldn't Winamp3 be the 3rd version of Winamp?

And why is Winamp 5 based on 2, and not 3? Or 4?

So basically, I have to take this issue up with the creators of the plugin I'm using? I'm using "Nullsoft Crossfading Output v0.95 (x86)(experimental)."
</EDIT>

There was never a version 4 of Winamp.
Winamp3 was something totally different than Winamp 2.X. Winamp 5.X is a continuation of 2.X.

If you want the volume control to not control Window's WAVE volume, switch to the DirectSound output. It also has crossfading.

Yes, I understand there never was a v4 of Winamp. I was just wondering why they went from 2 to 3, and then skipped three by updating 2 to 5. Almost nonsensical, if you ask me.

Winamp3 was just the name of a new Winamp project, and got dumped for an updated 2.x?

Well, the directsound one does have crossfading, but this crossfader sounds so much better for reasons I can't explain.

It's got active crossfading, so even if I manually switch soongs (by clicking next or previous) is does some sweet crossfading even then. It fades in such a way that even if both songs are of different BPMs, they don't end up clashing, which I found happening with the default Xfader on occasion.

I found a fix for it, though. It has a checkbox I overlooked (I didn't understand what it meant at the time) labeled "Alternate setting method (try if volume control doesn't work)." Now the volume control is twitchy, and it has a slight delay, but it's separate from the main Windows volume control...so I'm happy.

I just wish they could add the split playlist feature into Winamp 5.

So Winamp3 is a separate project? Why don't they just join the two and utilise the benefits of both? What are the big differences? The only thing I noticed was the lack of the split playlist thing from 3 to 5.

Many others too, so it's part of the Wishlist.

Thanks, guys. Volume problem resolved, and I give up trying to understand the change from 2 to 3 to 5.

By the way: nice one, drewbar.
