Sudden error message syndrome!

Hi there, total newbie here.

My Winamp has been working perfectly well for ages until today, now I keep getting an error message saying:

Bad directsound driver
Please install proper drivers or select another device configuration
Error code 1878000A

I'm afraid I am a total novice and I have no idea what this means. I updated Direct X as requested to no avail. Help, because a great deal of my video files are wmv (don't ask me what that means either) Basically, I open and I play and have encountered nil problem before.

Never mind, things are in working order now, I just downloaded a load of windows updates that for some reason my computer stopped alerting me to.
