Sound volume changing alone
The volume is changing alone. I already uncheck the "fast layer 3 EQ" in the MPEG audio decoder. The problem continues.
Already switch from Waveout to Directsound in the output section with no sucess. Disabled and enabled volume control, and no sucess. Mp3 with variable bitrates (192 - 320) are changing the volume up to down and down to up alone. Songs with fixed bitrate are showing this problem too, but with less frequency. I already uninstall 5.2 and put back 2.95 version of Winamp (and without Direct Sound), but the problem persists. I was using 2.95 in 2004 and at that time dont had these problems. I'm using a SB 5.1 Live, but more than a week ago I was using a Sound Max onboard card, because i'm with a new computer (my third computer, a Intel P4, MSI motherboard, 512mb ram), and was with the same problem with the SM. More than one year ago (2004) I was using windows 98ME and had no problems. This problem started when I installed Windows XP in 2005 in my second computer, a AMD in a ECS motherboard (the first, a P3, broke out, after five years of use). Initially was the SP1 version, but after that SP2. I was thinking that was a problem with this second computer, because it had some problems in the motherboard (mainly related to energy issues). But now I see that it was not the cause. With a third computer now in 2006, fresh installation of windows xp sp2, and experimenting with two sound cards the problem of volume changing alone persists. Unfortunatelly I cant use Windows 98 ME anymore in these new computers. Sometimes I think that it is a problem with Windows XP. It's the codec or the plugin? The codec I'm using is the Fraunhofer that comes with windows xp. How I can proceed? Where I can find a good codec or plugin to play mp3? Thanks for any help. PS: sorry for the bad english. |

Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by 'Sound volume changing alone'.
What does 'alone' mean in this context? Do you mean you want Winamp to control the system-wide Wave volume (the one you find when you double-click the speaker icon in the systray)? In that case you can select waveOut as output plugin: Prefs (Ctrl+P) > Output > select waveOut output Or do you mean the Winamp volume is changing out of itself?? Or do you mean your songs have different volumes? In that case, try MP3Gain. |

Do you mean that the volume changes during the playback of a song? If so, is it possible you have one of the many DSP plugins running like, say "Enhancer"? Some of these guys try to normalize volume as the dynamics of music tracks change. Just a thought. |

Already atualized drivers, running windows xp sp2, and the sound go up and down with the volume. Already tried mp3gain, but dont solve the problem. |

Maybe try these DirectSound output tweaks.
If that doesn't help either, please provide additional system specs (read this!). |

System specifications:
Pentium 4 2,8ghz prescott 64 bits. 512mb ddr ram. Motherboard MSI 915pl neo-V. Hd Western Digital 80gb using FAT32 file system. Running Windows XP SP2. Sound card: SB Live 5.1. Onboard sound (deactivated): Sound Max. Video: Radeon 9200. The other computer that I had before february was: AMD 1,6ghz 32 bits. 512mb ddr ram. Motherboard ECS. Running Windows XP SP2. Onboard sound (was deactivated too): Realtek Audio. Video: Via. In both computers the problem that happens is an alteration on sound volume when playing mp3, and mp3 only. This dont happens with movies or games. I dont known if happens with wav files. The sound changes from stereo to mono and mono to stereo too. The trouble started when i put windows xp sp2 in the computer. Before with sp1 the problem was not visible. Dont happens only with winamp, but with windows media player 10 and xmplayer as well. Dont known what is. Tried all tweaks with winamp and wmp, without any sucess. Last year I tried to put WindowsME in the AMD machine, but it dont work anymore. I'm thinking about a total migration to Linux, but if someone can make some advice just to find what problem is, I give my thanks. |

Sorry, but if it's not a Winamp-specific issue, I don't think we can help you.
A HijackThis log and a dxdiag log may show something, you can post it here if you want, maybe someone here will have time to look at it (see system specs above). The fact that it does not happen with movies and games makes me wonder, however... Are you sure it's not a problem with the mp3 files themselves? Did you encode them yourself, or did you download them? |

The same is happening to me.
At random points during mp3 playback the music will get much louder (the winamp volume slider isnt changing any, and neither is the pc volume slider) then go right back to the normal level I also have a SB Live 5.1 card. Problem did not occur until a few months ago, and I have had XP with SP2 for longer than that |
