Winamp hangs at startup
Hi
Having a problem with a fresh install of Winamp. I've got a HP laptop (Celeron 1.6 / 320Gb RAM / integrated Radeon IGP 340M video / Conexant AC-Link audio / 20Gb HDD) with a reasonably fresh install of WinXP SP2 on it (3 months or so). Whenever I start Winamp the explorer stops responding. Audio works fine with MP, so I don't think it's the sound chip. The mouse will keep responding, but I can't interact with the system. Taskmgr shows that Winamp get to about 9Mb of used memory and then stabilises, all other progams are working fine, then about 3secs later, nothing will respond. Winamp was version 5.092, but upgraded to 5.21 using the Full package and same problem. Any thoughts? Thanks Greg |

crash on startup is a relatively common issue. if the following thread doesn't clear it up, just do a forums search for hang or crash or something similar along with startup.

This thread doesn't seem relevant. The thread (and the thread off it) are talking about installing the ASIO dll. But as mine is a fresh install I don't have this plugin.
Also, did a 'startup hang' and 'startup crash' searches before I posted. None discussed my issues. Anything else? Greg |

v5.2.1.xxx HANGS
Hi there,
I have been reading through the forums, and see hints about the same problem -- As yet NO solutions. I am afraid I'm am not going to help either. At present, winamp v5.2.1.497 hangs every time I attempt to run it. I have UNINSTALL-ed it and re-INSTALL-ed several times. The system application log only tells me this: code: The careful will notice that the version number is differnt to my now version -- v5.2.1.497 -- that's because of the reinstalls. The significant thing to me is that I have only done one thing today. Winamp worked perfectly until I tried to play a CD with something called CDS200-player on it. The secquence of activity is as follows.
Winamp still worked fine for the first non-special CD. The next CD said "the CD player was busy". Which it was not. After uninstalling and reinstalling winamp, there is no difference the first winamp window comes up and hangs. I can't quite find this new CDS200-player programme is either, to UNINSTALL it. If someone knows how to do that, it might be worth a try(??). Are there any diagnostics I can enable?
I think a log4winamp would be a winner 'plugin' right now. Thanks in advance, Will |

Hello again,
... here's an update. I now have winamp 5.2.1 working again. This is what I did, to get there...
...So far so good. I am unsure about my CDS200 CD (Cat Empire -- cool music, horrid CD set-up). I will give that a go later. The registry cleaner showed several sound file types with no 'owner'. I can't say, it is simply suspicious associations. ![]() Good luck, live long and prosper. Aloha, Will. |

when you say reinstall winamp to a new clean folder, do you mean one other than C:\program files\winamp ?? JM had a problem a while back that installing it into a different directory fixed

Winamp hangs at startup
Hi
I had the same problem after upgrading to version 5.21. Winamp was hanging for about 30-60 sec. I could solve this problem as follows: Go to "Options" -> "Preferences" -> "General Preferences" -> "Portables" and have a look to the list of "Installed Device plug-ins (loaded at startup). Remove now the "Creative" Plug-in. Now, I have a quick-start of winamp as before... Good luck! Manfred |
