Playing NeroAACEnc encoded AAC files

I just downloaded the Nero AAC encoder (http://www.nero.com/nerodigital/eng/...tal_Audio.html) and gave it a trial run.

And I updated my WinAmp 5.13 to 5.21 not an hour ago.

Starting WinAmp by double clicking on the resultant *.aac file started WinAmp but did not begin playing the track.

So I manually clicked the play button and WinAmp crashed (MS Visual Studio debugging tools provides this message...

Unhandled exception at 0x01aa6faa in winamp.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000.

).

If I rename the file *.mp4 it plays perfectly well.

This behaviour is consistent - any file that Winamp is capable of playing (i.e a *.wav file) that is named *.aac crashes WinAmp.

My machine is a AMD64 +3200 running Windows XP Pro SP2.

Chances are what Nero is producing is actuall MP4 files and not raw AAC files. (MP4 is just a container, and AAC is one of the things that mostly goes in it, but I am guessing you know that). Anyways... * Fixed: [in_mp3] crash on invalid AAC files and streams in the upcomming 5.22.

Though, you might want to set Nero to be naming those files .MP4 and not .AAC.

It is producing mp4 files, therefore you have to name them .mp4 or .m4a otherwise a lot of players will choke on them.

yeah, the new cli encoder, while a positive step, certainly appears to have some caveats that will bite you.

It will only generate files in an mp4 wrapper, but you can name them what you like. A fair few players will stumble on this, unless they are autodetecting filetypes. Your files should end in either mp4 or m4a.

I've also had many many issues with trying to pipe in PCM audio on stdin, but whatever.
