The virus that is winamp broke my movie files

I installed winamp. When I launched a movie it played in winamp so I switched it back to play with windows mediaplayer but the movie could now longer be played by anything other than winamp and now all my movies files have a winamp icon. I tried uninstalling winamp but the movies can no longer be played at all now.

I need a way to restore things to normal. Before I ever installed winamp.

I think you need a crash course in file associations. Take a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307859

A lot of programs "take over" certain type of files so that they can be opened directly from the operating system interdaces (file managers and such) instead of through the programs open dialog. These are settings that can be altered in the program itself, also Winamp, and is not a virus by any means.

So I suggest you "read the manual" and make the changes you want, and maybe learn something new and useful about you operating system while doing it!

Well, first of all, you are given the option whether or not to associate Winamp with video filetypes, audio filetypes, audio cd, etc etc during installation. So if you didn't uncheck those options, then whose fault is it?

Secondly, Winamp doesn't modify any video files whatsoever, and doesn't even install any video codecs. It uses the System's DirectShow Filters, ie. the exact same method as Windows Media Player. So it's not possible for Winamp to have caused the problem you describe (and calling Winamp a virus doesn't help anyone here to want to help you).

If you require any further help, then please read this first, and supply the relevant/required information. Pay particular attention to paragraph 6, re: problems with video playback (ie. we need to see a dxdiag log and a Gspot log for one of the videos which won't play).

Personally I have found that installing ffdshow described as:

"A DirectShow and VFW codec for decoding/encoding many video and audio formats, including DivX and XviD movies."

solves nearly all video playback problems. Get rid of all installed codecs first and then install ffdshow from here:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

Make sure to get the build for your CPU (SSE SSE2 support).

And yes, Winamp will happily use ffdshow for video playback along with most other video players out there.

I think the OP needs to read more carefully before he installs software. Winamp is a great application where nearly everything can be turned on and off. Windows Media Player on the other hand has been known to "hijack" file types and such over time, not to mention Real(pain in the a**)Player..

Yup, I normally recommend ffdshow, but I like to see a dxdiag & gspot log first, just so I know exactly what is required.
