can't stop RealPlayer from grabbing pls . Did all the obvious.

In trying to fix the infamous IE 5.5 "save or open" dialog box problem , I seem to have created another problem.

I can't get Winamp to open pls files anymore. Realplayer opens in its place. I've reinstalled Winamp, set associations to Winamp in the program AND in Windows (using W2k here). Since PLS is actually set to Winamp in Folder Options, I can't see what's making Realplayer kick in.

Realplayer is not set to reassociate any extentions.

Anyone have an idea as to what is causing this??

Real Player is quite aggressive about file associations. Associate Winamp with PLS file, then turn on the Winamp Agent (Preferences>Setup>Agent> Check "Enable Winamp Agent" and "Maintain file associations").
If this doesn't work, post again.

Also, it'd be wise to first goto:
RealPlayer -> View -> Preferences -> Upgrade tab

It sounds like you've already unchecked mp3, pls & m3u from within "Re-associate",
but have you also unselected them in "Auto Restore Settings"?

After doing this, then do as Twilightseer says!

As I said ,did all the 'easy stuff'. I've done all the things mentioned and still no go. Winamp is actually listed as the program to run with PLS files. RP insists on running.

Haven't gone so far as to remove RP as I'm trying to avoid too many system changes. Never know when theres an evil gotcha lurking.

What registry key could be hosed here? I've looked and don't see anything obvious.

Make sure the mimetype isn't audio/plx (or whatever it is that RP uses)
Folder Options -> FileTypes -> Winamp playlist file -> Edit
The correct mimetype for Winamp is any of:
audio/scpls (default); audio/mpeg; audio/x-mpegurl; audio/m3u

Some suggestions there got this fixed.

Did some major digging prior to the fix and the problem stemmed from the pls file being renamed into an xpl file due to the way the MIME registry pointers were set. The xpl playlist would load into Winamp, but not begin or be able to play. Dang.

Reinstalling Winamp and reassociating did NOT fix this on its own, maybe it should have that capability .

These were bascially the keys that fixed this

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pls]
@="Winamp.PlayList"
"Content Type"="audio/scpls"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\audio/scpls]
"Extension"=".pls"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\audio/x-scpls]
"Extension"=".pls"

The extensions were set to the XPL type , which did not work very well at all ;--).

I was having the same problems with Win2k also. Does not seem to be a problem in 98 or ME.
