No video on .avi

I have some .avi files on my harddrive that when played only do the audio, and no video. (the video screen does not comp up and whe i bring it up it just shows me a lovely picture of Mike). the .avi files do display in the video part of my library.
do i need to update something?
running winamp 5.21
i have the searched the troubleshooter *THREAD not forum* and other places but havent turned up anything usefull.

any help would be great,

thanks! i read the post and went to download the codecs, downloaded and install the XP Codec Pack i found on one of the links there and it works now! thank you very much.
