And one more important information, adding on to what reaper stated:
Main difference in 5.x is the "modern UI". But that is completely optional. If you don't install that, you'll get almost 2.9x, with lots of bugfixes...

(simply remove gen_ff.dll from the plugins folder)

And it's still quick and stable (that is not true if you're using the modern UI. Still stable, but definitely not quick)
