Why isn't there a Mac verison?
I am an old time Winamp user, 6+ years. I have recently switched to the Mac platform because it is the new-media industry standard, and that's what I'll be going into as a career.
So, I open my new Mac up when it arrives and deck it out with all of my favourite software... and then I tried to get Winamp. I want to know why Nullsoft, AOL, or whomever didn't bother developing a Mac verison. Winamp is a great peice of software --a whole lot better than iTunes. It was very unwise, making that decision. Nullsoft cut them selves off from a large group of users by doing this. Hell, I can't even use the old Winamp beta, as it isn't compatible with OS X. Is anyone else as angered about this as I am? -Derek edit: Hell, I can't even use the old Winamp alpha, as it isn't compatible with OS X. --I think alpha was as far as they got, am I right or wrong about that? |

So, I see that everyone has a bug up their ass about this.
I just finished reading through this thread: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....acintosh+apple I'm hoping that someone who matters has since changed their mind about Macs. Macs are superior to PCs in almost every way - ecspecially since their move to the Intel platform. Macs have become the most versatile computing platform around. Nullsoft ought to open their eyes and do something about broadening their horizons. Has anyone else realized this? |

There is no Mac version, there is no plans for a Mac version.
Staffing is quite limited, it's not worth the time to take focus of the windows version. |

My question is still unanswered, why not focus on a Mac version? The Mac market is ever expanding. A new version of OS X is set to release fairly soon, and that is bound to only steal more of the market away from PCs. Sure, Vista is on the way, but it'll only catch up to the current version of OS X, if that.
I'm not saying to stop developing the Windows version, but why limit yourselves? You've got AOL on your side, and they've got more than enough money to hire a few Mac coders. Hell, I'm sure that there would be people willing to aid in a project for free if given the chance. Winamp is such a nice program, it's a shame to see it be tied down like this. |

I also love the Mac PLATFORM... but that is what it is an entire PLATFORM, not just the OS. If it were just the OS it would have more than 5% of the global market share. I agree that iTunes is lacking in many areas, but it is what you have for now. Look around for a different player that has more of what you want. Until the OS can be installed on commodity hardware I do not see Winamp ever being considered for the PLATFORM.

There ane no resources for a Mac version. Development is concentrated on the Windows version. There will not be a Mac version. No matter how much of a Mac Fanboy you are, it doesn't justify the total rewite necessary for such little market share.

how about you run boot camp.... problem solved. And about AOL manpower, rather then work on winamp, AOL bought up winamp so they could have that code to make their own player... I am not sure they even intended on keeping dev the way it is now... why would they, when the were investing so greatly in AOL Media Player.
There has to be a mac fanboy out there that can get the latest version of winamp running on a mac... how about you offer up 100 dollars... |

Honestly, I just want the graphics visualizer. So that way I can put cool effects on my 32 inch LCD tv when playing music

avs and milkdrop are open source, get someone on the mac platform to port/mimick them and there you go solution solved. the already pushed dev team just can't do what you're asking for and the bods at aol wouldn't fund it either i'd say (if they were going to then they'd have done it by now)

the mac is superior thing is quite an opinion.
people have these stories how their faster how their more secure how they dont get viruses or anything. while this is true for this short time being, after macs get more well known people will start making mac viruses and mac spyware and mac software which was poorly written causing the machine to crash and so on. all macs are really doing is making the computing world more difficult. now theres more stuff out there thats not compatible with eachother and the differences between it all is so small its not worth the hassle. for instance if there was to be a mac version of winamp that would be time away frombuilding up winamp to converting it to mac. having a mac version doesn't really do any good it doesn't do anything windows cant. it would really just be wasting time and money |

Ummm, not to push the devils advocate, but isn't that the point of a free market system? Selling to EVERY customer, not just the ones you want to sell to?
I thought the purpose of any good business was to get EVERYONE to buy your stuff, not just the majority? Maximization of profits and all that jazz. |

all fine and good that but there's not the time/funds to provide it for everyone. also you'd then need to have every single plugin updated to work on the mac winamp otherwise you're debilitating them as well and the whole idea of winamp that it has a massive plugin database to expand on it's capabilities. so it's not a simple thing to do and i know full well that i'd not both making mac versions of things since i don't have a mac and like the dev team am pushed myself for time just to maintain my windows based plugins.
