Crashing Wma

Winamp Crashes when using WMA files. I also want to change all the .wma's to .mp3's for my stepmania files. And thats the only files that work are .mp3's. I wonder if its my codecs that are screwing it up i have a Large codec pack for OGM's cause i download anime and there was no way around an OGM. Well...
The only question.
Why does winamp crash when using WMA files?

-PC or Motherboard make/model Dell, Mobo: Foxconn
-CPU & RAM : Dont know the cpu, Ram is 256 mb
-Sound card or chip: Sound blaster?
-Videocard: 64mb
-Windows OS (including Service Pack, eg. WinXP sp2): Win XP Sp2 (main) Vista beta (secondary)
-DirectX version (start > run > dxdiag) Direct X 7
-Winamp version (eg. 5.23) (i think its 5.24 or the latest one)
-Confirmation of the Winamp installation type (Pro, Full, Bundle, Lite) Bundle
-Whether you chose 'separate' or 'shared' user settings on the multi-user page: Separate

Firewall: Microsoft firewall, Symantec 2005 & 2006 fire walls. (some reason 2005 wouldnt change...)

The 2 main things we need from the "more info" link are:

1. HijackThis log
2. my_plugins_list.txt

The HJT log will show us a list of all startup & concurrently running processes, so we can see if there's any possible conflicts (even if there isn't any malware present).

The plugins list will show us if you've got any 3rd-party plugins present which might be causing the problem, and will also tell us if you're using all the latest versions of the default 1st-party plugins.

Also include:

Details of the crash error message

and if possible, a link to one of the wma files which causes the crash
(zip it up and upload it to some webspace somewhere, or use one of the free sites referenced in the "more info" thread).

In addition to winamp being 'laggy' when I seek through the song, I think I found a consistant way to make winamp crash using a WMA file.

Try pausing the WMA file and then try to seek either reverse or forward. This seems to crash winamp everytime for me. This does not happen when using an MP3 file of course.

Where do you find the HJT log and the plugins .txt ??

Info on how to use HJT (HijackThis) and then generate a HijackThis log, and info on how to use DrO's 'One for Nunz' plugin (gen_nunzio.dll) in order to generate and then attach the my_plugin_list.txt file to your post (along with the HJT log), are fully explained in -->THIS<-- section of the 'FAQ: Troubleshooters; Common Issues; Clean Install Instructions; READ THIS FIRST !!!' Sticky thread, which drewbar already linked to above (a few times as full system specs).

well before I go through the process of getting the log and text file, can you re-create the problem I'm having?

just pause the WMA file and seek.

Well, I have no crappy WMA file on my system, LOL!
Hang on a bit and I'll attempt to temp-download one from online somewhere and then see if I can reproduce the problem with Winamp 5.24.

Okay. I downloaded an Alanis Morissette WMA (I'll convert to MP3 later or else dump it if the quality sucks). Pausing and then seeking caused no actual crash, but definitely caused Winamp to completely hang. I had to 'force' shutdown Winamp by 'ending task' in order to close the app...
Quote:
Error Signature:

szAppName : winamp.exe szAppVer : 5.2.4.703 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000
So, I can definitely confirm this. No probs with MP3's however (as expected).

BUT... although I don't see this listed as a Known Winamp 5 Bug, I do think this may have already been reported before. I can't recall just now.

But, yes... confirmed, with Winamp 5.24.

Sweet! thats the exact behavior that I have. I have to force close by task manager. I guess what you think is 'hanging' I think is 'crashing' but whatever.

Yeah, so this is the problem that I've been having. Yes, no probs with MP3s as expected (because all anyone ever cares about is that old format right?) Dont get me debating about WMA and MP3

Yes, this sounds like I'm the first to bring this prob to the table (because no one, except for me, cares about WMA)

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

will there be a new winamp revision with a fix for this? How can this be officially reported?

Yes. It's definitely a valid bug IMHO.

I'm not gonna report it because I don't really care (I have no WMA files nor will I ever - no debate though, don't worry )

To report it do this:

1) Start a new thread/topic appropriately named (Eg: Winamp 5.24 hangs on seek on pause with WMA's) in the Winamp Bug Reports forum.

2) Explain the problem, but also link to this thread, but starting at my above post. Here is a direct link to that post: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....20#post1987620

Hopefully, DJ Egg (a Moderator here), or Benski (a Winamp developer) will spot it, be referenced back here, and 'fix' it for the next release (5.25).

If you have video support (in_dshow) installed then maybe try using that instead of in_wm.

Uninstall in_wm.dll (change the filename in the Winamp plugins folder to in_wm.dll.off or somesuch) and then add ;WMA to the extension list in the config. for the in_dshow.dll input plugin.

May work for the time being.

Good job, UJ. Works a charm.
So, now we seem to have a 'temp' fix.
Benski and the other devs will need to correct whatever went wrong with in_wm.dll

theascension...

For now go ahead and apply UJ's 'fix', but file that bug report too. The devs will also see UJ's 'fix' when referenced back to this thread.

It's not really my fix Bubba, it's the standard workaround whenever in_wm gets broken

Oh, okay, but I still give you credit and kudos on this, since you suggested it and apparently, it works just fine (for now).

The WMA file can be played and is totally seekable on pause using in_dshow

Note:
1) the in_wm freeze on pause bug is known and already fixed for 5.25
2) in_dshow doesn't support drm-protected wma
3) in_dshow doesn't work with some mms:// streams
